"THE ANNALS OF TAZEWELL COUNTY VIRGINIA' BY John Newton Harman, Sr. 1922 The bible of William Brooks was in the possession of William Brooks of Thompson Valley, Tazewell County, Virginia. The bible was printed in 1756. Written in ink were the following notes and birthdates of his children: William Brooks his book, Sept 20 1782. Left Fanquier in November 1779/ John Brooks born June 11 1770, Richard Brooks Feb 12 1774, Thomas Brooks Jan 22, 1776, Polly Brooks,, Dec 22, 1778, Nancy Brooks Dec 20 1780, William Brooks April 7, 1782, Sarah Brooks March 10 1783, Elizabeth Brooks Feb 13, 1785, Mary Brooks July 19, 1789, Levicy Brooks September 2, 1791. There were two other children: Margaret Brooks b April 7, 1772 and James Brooks b. March 24, 1788 from records of Ray Sheffield. William Brooks was a Revolutionary War pensiolner. His application is on file at the National Archives in Washington DC (R1259 Va, microfilm series M-804, Roll No 355) He was born Feb 3 1752 in Fanquier County and entered service in Oct. 1778 at which time he was a citizen of Culpepper County. He was drafted a second time in Feb 1781 at which time he was a resident of Botetouri County Virginia. He applied for a pension on the 25th of Sept 1832 at which time he lived in Tazewell County. He was 81 years of age at the time. MILITARY RECORDS; REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION LISTS 1840 census of The Revolutionary War, state of Virginia, Western District, Page 136 William Brooks age 88. According to military records 1850 page136: A list of names of persons residing in Virginia who have applied for pensions under the act of July 4, 1836, whose claims have been suspended: Names Nancy Brooks, widow of William Brooks Residence Jeffersonville, Tazewell County. Reason for suspension: Did not serve six months in any regularly embodied corps. According to Colonial Virginia Source Records 1600's 1700's: Gleanings of Virginia History, Payroll book of Light Dragoons, p 199 "Pay roll of the Fifth Troop in the First Regiment, Light Dragoons, Commanded by Col. Theodorick Bland, for the month of December 1777: William Brooks received in full. And again in Military Records: Revolutionary War Pension List: Revolutionary War pensioners of 1818, a statement showing the widows and orphans, Virginia p. 256 and page 170 No. 438 Brooks, William, do to widow. Do to Private. Orrignal commencement of pensions 30th July 1814. Pension per month: four dollars. Pension per annum 48.00 In August 1843 Nancy Brooks, widow of William applied for a pension. She was 94 years old at the time. William had died Jan. 24, 1841. Nancy and William were married Sept 5, 1769. Annals of Tazewell County Virginia: "It appearing to the satisfaction of this court, that William Brooks, deceased was a Revolutionary War Pensioner, that he departed this life the 24th day of January 1841, leaving his widow, Anna Brooks, and the following being all his heirs and legal representatives, to wit. John Brooks, William Brooks, Margaret Kirk, Elizabeth Stephenson, Nancy Clyburn, Sally Todd, Polly Brooks and Louise Asberry, it is ordered that the same be certified". COLONIAL VIRGINIA SOURCE RECORDS: abstracts from 18th century newspapers, surnames A-B page 41 "Brooks William, dec'd hia ex. James Larew, will sell a tract of his land adjoining the plant (plantation) of Mr. George Washington and John Briscoe Esq. near Charlestown containing 50 ac 30 Oct 1799 William Brooks is buried in Farm Cemetery in Thompson Valley, Tazewell, Tazewell County Virginia
