I am researching Charles Nicholas, who emigrated from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France in 1860-1870. He owned a hotel in Philadelphia in the 1880 census. He married Elizabeth, but I do not know anything about her family or heritage.

Other families include Michael Dooley, who emigrated from Ireland in the 1850's. He fought as a Sergeant in the 69th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War, and was at the copse of trees at the "high tide of the Confederacy" at Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge.

Another family is that of Thomas Berry Brown, who (according to family legend only) fought for the Confederacy as a young boy from Northern Virginia. After the war, he wound up working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard at he turn of the century. His mother and siblings went South to Rome, Georgia. His father was Edward and his mother was Elizabeth.

Any help on these lines would be very helpful, thanks.

There is one additional "wall" that I cannot connect. Thomas Berry Brown had a very old document in a small wooden box. Dated in 1763, it appoints a James McDowell as a Captain in the Augusta County, VA militia, and it is signed by Governour Francis Faquier. Try as I might, I cannot make the connection from the McDowell families to the Browns. The McDowells are very well known in the Augusta County (now Rockbridge County) area of Virginia.

Again, thanks for any contacts.
