I am researching the Johnstone family from Dumfries, Scotland. Walter Johnstone, born 1769, was originally a shoe maker. He married Sarah Pattie and had two sons. The elder, John Johnstone went to Birmingham where he owned a photography shop and invented a carriage light. After Sarah died, in 1804, Walter remarried Agness Carlyle, the daughter of John Carlyle in Sandbed. Agness was sister to Jean Carlyle, the first wife of John Carlyle, the father of the famous author Thomas Carlyle. Walter and Agness had two children: William Francis and James Barbour Johnstone. Walter traveled as a missionary to Prince Edward Island, and wrote a book about the Island.
