This photograph shows Robert H. Bartow in the Brandon, Wisconsin blacksmith shop where he worked. It was here one of my favorite family stories takes place. Once upon a time, before Jake and Marie married, Joseph Frank Nikolaus brought a horse to the shop to be shod. The horse was acting up too much for Robert H. Bartow, so he refused to work on the horse until it calmed down. To expedite things, Joseph positioned himself under the horse's flanks and lifted the horse's hind quarters on his shoulders and up from the floor, so Robert was able to do the job. True story, folks.
