James Volney Bartow

James Volney Bartow
This is James Volney Bartow. Born in 1842, he fought beside his older (by three years) brother, Chester H., on the Union side during the Civil War, participating in the Seige of Petersburg, Virginia in June 1864. It was James who had the huge memorial erected for his young wife, Permelia (d. 1870), and two very young daughters (d. 1867 & 1869) in an Omro, Wisconsin cemetery. Land records indicate James purchased acreage in Minnesota in 1876 and 1883, so it seems he left the painful reminders behind to homestead and farm there.
