His skull was fractured. He had left the house to catch a horse, and it is supposed the animal kicked him as he approached it. PIERCE - Rites At Beverly Beverly---Funeral services for John V. PIERCE, 58, were held Monday afternoon at the home. Burial was in Beverly cemetery. Mr. PIERCE died Saturday at Marietta Memorial hospital where he underwent an operation 10 days ago. He had been in poor health for the past year. He was a son of the late David C. and Jane E. Stevenson PIERCE, and was born in Morgan county, Jan. 1, 1882. He had resided in Beverly since 1916. Surviving are two brothers and two sisters, William PIERCE and Miss Margaret PIERCE of the home in Beverly, and Harley PIERCE and Mrs. Anna WEST of the Pierce farm in Center township. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday Times Signal (Zanesville, Ohio) July 29, 1940 Front Page Col. 1 Two person died today in Washington county after being prostrated by the heat. they were Oliver P. ALLISON 74, of Waterford, and Mrs. Mary L. BELL, 84 , of Barlow. RESIDENT IS DEAD Beverly---Miss Marian Alice KLINGER, 21, of near Waterford, died Saturday. She suffered a stroke on Friday and pneumonia developed within a few hours. She was the daughter of John G. and Alice SCHWENDEMAN KLINGER, She attended Watertown grade schools and graduated from Waterford high school in 1937, being an honor student throughout. In the fall of 1937 she entered St. Thomas hospital in Akron, where she took two years of nurses training, being forced to quit because of ill health. She had been employed as a nurse at Rocky Glen sanitarium, McConnelsville, since June, 1939. Miss KLINGER is survived by her parents, two brothers and two sisters, John Emmett, of Marietta college; Miss Ella Mae, teacher in Wolf Creek schools, Miss Margaret and Robert all of the home. there are several uncles and aunts. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic church of Churchtown. Funeral services were held Monday with Father Charles WALSH officiating. O. W. KEITH Mrs. Katie KEITH, prominent resident of Waterford died at her home Saturday afternoon at 4:45 o’clock following a short illness. She was born in Center township, Morgan county, August 24, 1870, the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Mary Jane SEICKARD PHILLIS. On March 2, 1892, she was united in marriage to Owen W. Keith at Centerville. Mrs. KEITH spent her early life in Center township but had been a resident of Waterford since 1908. She was a member of the St. Moriah Chapter No. 506 Order of Eastern Star of Beverly and the Beverly Rebekah lodge. Surviving are a son, Joseph O. KEITH of Waterford, an examiner for the state department of taxation; one grandson, Roy Seely KEITH and one granddaughter, Jo Ann KEITH of the home, and one brother, William E. PHILLIS of Beverly. Her husband died on February 27, 1939. Funeral services will be held at the Mindling funeral home at Beverly, Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock Eastern War Time. MINDLING OF BEVERLY IS NAMED TRUSTEE Beverly, O., March 5---Chester H. MINDLING of Beverly, is a new member of the board of trustees of the Washington County Children’s home. He has been appointed by the county commissioners to succeed James S. DEVOL and will serve for five years. Under the law, a five-member board manages the home and one member is appointed by the commissioners at the quarterly meeting in March of each year. Mr. DEVOL’S term expired at this time. He had been a member of the board on different occasions in the past and long had been identified with the institution. Mr. MINDLING, the new member is a furniture dealer here. The home board is now composed of Judge A. T. WILLIAMSON, of Marietta; Ray GODDARD, of Cutler; Authur D. BARKER, Muskingum township; Charles R. MINDLING RITES MONDAY Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Beverly Methodist church for Chester Herbert MINDLING, 45, Beverly funeral director and furniture dealer, who died Friday at a Columbus hospital following an illness of complications. The body will remain at the Mindling Funeral home until noon Monday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until time for the services. Burial will be at Beverly. an outstanding figure in Masonic lodge and American Legion affairs, Mr. MINDLING held membership in many other lodges and organizations. His widow; Roberta K. MINDLING, was elected this week as worth grand matron of the Grand Chapter of Ohio, Order of Eastern Star. Born Dec. 22, 1898, on a farm in Watertown township, Washington county, he was the son of David N. and Clancie MOREY MINDLING. When he was eight years old his parents located on a farm in Fairfield township. He was graduated from Vincent high school in 1918, after which he entered Marietta college for training with an SATC unit of World War I. After further schooling at Ohio State he taught school in Fairfield and Barlow townships, Washington County. He began his professional career as a funeral director and embalmer following his graduation from the Cincinnati College of Embalming, starting in business at Beverly on Jan. 1, 1922, under the form name of Maxwell & Mindling, furniture and undertaking. L. C. MAXWELL and Mr. MINDLING continued this partnership for several years before the latter assumed full ownership and operation of the successful business. For the past several years, Mr. MINDLING owned and operated farms in Fairfield and Morgan counties, besides being an owner and operator in several oil and gas fields in Washington county. It was on June 14, 1922 that Mr. MINDLING was married to Miss Roberta Gordan KELLY. Mr. MINDLING was a member of Vincent Presbyterian church, was Past Master of Mt. Moriah lodge, F. & A. M. No. 37; Past High Priest of Rufus PUTNAM chapter, Not. 108, R. A. M., both of Beverly; was a member of Marietta council No. 78, R. & S. M. and Marietta commandery No. 50, Knights Templar, a member of Scioto consistory, 32nd degree Masons; Anclent Accepted Scottish Rite, Balley of Columbus, He was a Past Patron of Mount Moriah chapter No. 506, O. E. S. of Beverly, Past Noble Grand of Beverly I. O. O. No. 84 and was a member of Beverly Rebekah lodge. Mr. MINDLING was also a past commander of Russell Chadwich post, American Legion, at Beverly, and was affiliated with Waterford grange and Buell lodge No.. 395, Knights of Pythias, at Lowell. He was a trustee of Washington county children’s home and was a director of Waterford Commercial Savings bank. For six years, he was president of the 25th district Funeral Directors association. Surviving are his widow, Roberta K.; his mother, Mrs. Claucie MOREY MINDLING of Watertown, and a brother, Dayton N. R. HUGG of Chester, Meigs county. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) April > 28, 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Hobart DOWLING and little son moved this week from Waterford, where they had been located four weeks, to the William PHILLIS property on South Center street here, recently vacated by the D. H. GORELL family. Mr. DOWLING is employed at the Waterford garage. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) February 18, 1938 page 18 col. 5 HISTORICAL SITES WILL BE MARKED Beverly, Feb. 17.---A. P. STUTES, Harley FRYE and C. W. JOHNSON, members of Beverly board of trade and Waterford grange, have charge of erecting suitable markers for the sites of the old mill on Wolf Creek, where the grange hall now stands, and for Fort Fry site, report that the markers will probably be erected in tow or three weeks. The bronze tablets on which the historical data will be inscribed will be 18 by 24 inches in size. The monument for the Fort Fry site will be of the native stone, either limestone, or sandstone, and two of the original millstones which ground grain in the Wolf creek will be utilized in the construction of marker for that site. NEW BITS-- (same page in Beverly news) Miss Ellen BARR, of Jamestown, N. Y., who spent the past month with Mr. and Mrs. Clifford LINSCOTT, left Monday for her home. Beverly Women’s club met Monday afternoon with Miss Lillian JOHNS. Nine members were present. Current events re discussed and a paper on the early history of Beverly was given by Mrs. E. J. RIECKER. The line of travel which the Northwest Territory or team is traversing from Spich. Mass., to Marietta was studied. Mrs. Thomas WOODS, Barlow is spending several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Slater NICHOLS. Mrs. Harriet BADGER is ill at her home. Mrs. Frances WELCH, who has been visiting friends and relatives in Lakewood, N. J., and in New York the past four months, returned to her home last week. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. HART made a trip to Columbus Wednesday. They were accompanied by Mrs. Clifford NICHOLS. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) February 23, 1938 GADD-HILL WEDDING ANNOUNCED Beverly, Feb 23---Miss Gertrude GADD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R.. GADD, and James Frederick HILL, Waterford, were united in marriage Saturday evening at the home of the bride’s parents here. The single ring ceremony was read by Rev.. Orlando BROWN, pastor of Waterford M. E. church, in the presence of relatives. Miss Lillian SACOW, Detroit, and George HILL, Pittsburgh, brother of the bride-groom attended the couple. Following the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. HILL left on a brief wedding trip. Upon returning they plan to make their home with Mrs. Nettie HILL, Waterford. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) > Thursday, April 7, 1938 pg. 7 col. 4 CHARLES APPLEGATE OF BEVERLY DIES Beverly, O., April 6---Charles R. APPLEGATE, prominent retired banker, died Tuesday at his winter home in Sarasota, Fla., Death resulted from a stroke of paralyais although he ad been in poor health for some time. Mr. APPLEGATE was a life long resident of Beverly and for may years was connected with the Citizens Bank company in the capacities of cashier, president and finally as chairman of the board of directors. Poor health had forced his retirement from active banking work several years ago. He was a leading figure in the Masonic lodge here and was for many years active in civic affairs. Surviving are his widow and one daughter Miss Eleanor, who were with him in Florida at the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon at Mindling funeral home here with the Masonic lodge in charge. Burial will be in the village cemetery. The body will lie in state at the home from 11 until 4 o’clock Friday. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) April 13, 1938 pg. 6 col. 7 & 8 DESCENDANT OF PIONEER HERE FOR CELEBRATION C. L. DONALDSON, Alanta, Ga., has come to Zanesville to be present for the Northwest Territory celebration. He and his sister, Mrs. I. W. DEMSTER, Route 6, great-grandchildren of Mr. SPRAGG, who built the block house below Waterford, attended the celebration at Beverly Tuesday., Mr. SPRAGG came to Ohio from Massachusetts with the original group which settled at Marietta but he located near Waterford. Mrs. DEMSTER and Mr. DONALDSON were guests of their sister, Mrs. Alpha BURNS, Beverly, on Tuesday. The “pioneers” Thursday will stop close to Mrs. DEMSTER’S home on Riverside drive on their way into the city Thursday.
