MAN HELD IN FATAL SHOOTING OF WOMAN; SAYS IT WAS ACCIDENT Marietta, O--(UP)---Harold H. RUSH, 23 of Lowell, O., was held on open charges today in connection with the fatal shooting of Mrs. Delphia Elizabeth MARTIN., 41 also of Lowell. Mrs. MARTIN died in Marietta Memorial hospital last night of a bullet wound in the left temple. RUSH told Sheriff Dean ELLIS that his .22-caliber rifle was accidentally discharged as he took it from the trunk of his automobile to shoot a groundhog. RUSH took Mrs. MARTIN to the hospital, where she died while being carried to the emergency room. Attendants said RUSH ran from the hospital, when told Mrs. MARTIN was dead. He was picked up later by sheriff’s deputies. RUSH, a former Ohio university student, is an employee of the Weirton Steel Co. Coshocton Tribune (Coshocton, Ohio) 1951 March 6 Front pg. HINTON, 72 , former resident of Marietta, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry KOHL, route 1, Newcomerstown. He had lived with Mrs. COHL one year. Mr. HINTON, a retired employe of the Hall Grindstone Co., was born in West Virginia and was a member of the Cutler Chapel U.B. church. Mr. STEGNER died yesterday morning at 6:45 o’clock at his home. He had been in failing health for some time. He was an oil producer and machinery dealer in Marietta. KATHRYN THOMPSON Mrs. Kathryn THOMPSON, 74, of 956 Market street, died at 12:15 a.m. today at her home following a heart attack. Although she had been in ill health her death was unexpected. A native of Washington county, she was the daughter of Martin and Carrie BARNHART and had lived in this city for 30 years. She was a member of the First Congregational church. Surviving are five sons, Alford of Chicago; Martin of Ashland, O.; Ormiston of Potts lane; Gerald of Goddard avenue and Rex THOMPSON of Vienna, W. SERVICES MONDAY FOR LOWELL WOMAN WITH 124 SURVIVORS (Special to The Signal) Lowell---Funeral services were held here Monday for Mrs. Justine STRAHLER HUCK, 88, of near Lowell who died Friday leaving 124 survivors. Mrs. HUCK was born May 10, 1864 the daughter of Joseph and Catherine STRAHLER. Her husband, John, died in 1832. She was a member of Ohio Lady of Mercy Catholic church where services wee held. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. HUCK was a member of the Catholic Women’s club and of the Altar and Rosary society. Surviving are 11 sons and daughters. RONEY, 80, former police chief of Marietta, were held here this afternoon at the Doudna and McClure funeral home with burial in Valley Cemetery here. Mr. RONEY, who served the Marietta police force from 1896 to 1910, died Monday night at Marietta Memorial hospital. After leaving the police department, he served as a conductor on the Marietta-Parkersburg interurban line and later became toll collector on the Williamstown-Marietta bridge, retiring in 1937. (UP)---Charles Thompson O’NEILL, 86, father of Ohio Atty. Gen. C. William O’NEILL died today in Marietta Memorial Hospital. O’NEILL was Washington County’s oldest attorney before retiring from practice in 1950 after 57 years. He had performed at Marietta Township justice of the peace after his retirement. He had been librarian of the Washington County Law Library for 30 years and swore his son into state office in 1951. He leaves another son, Daniel of Marietta, and three grandchildren. She is the sister-in-law of Treasurer Henry H. MYERS, 66, who died Saturday night at Marietta Osteopathic Hospital following major surgery Thursday. Miss WARREN will complete MYER’S third term as treasurer. It ends in September, 1957. Services will be conducted for MYERS, for 38 years a Methodist minister, Tuesday afternoon. DON C. SAVAGE Don Clifford SAVAGE, 72, of 1066 Wheeling avenue, former locktender at Marietta died Sunday morning at the Vaughn rest home where he had been a patient since Nov. 11. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Oct. 14. Mr. SAVAGE retired as locktender in 1945 after serving for 21 years. He was born Oct. 18, 1884, at Lowell, a son of Henry and Emma Dye SAVAGE. He was married to Jeanette MILDRED on Aug. 2, 1941. He resided here and at Marietta before going to Florida five years ago. Mr. ROBERTS is survived by his widow, a daughter Lucy Marie; a half-sister, Mrs. Van ORNDORFF of Waterford, and his stepmother, Mrs. Edith ROBERTS of Marietta. The daughter of the late Wiley and Mary TULLIUS DAVIS, she was born in Lowell May 14, 1898 and spent all of her life in that vicinity. In 1917 she married William STRAHLER of Waterford Rt. 2. She was a member of Ohio Lady of Mercy Catholic church at Lowell. Dearth, 84, of 107 Zullen Rd., Marietta, died in Elyria Memorial Hospital at 11:50 a.m. yesterday after a short illness. Mr. DEATHE was born in Washington County, Aug. 20, 1873. He is survived by his wife, Delia and a son, Harold of Elyria, with whom he was visiting when he was taken ill. The body was taken today from the Wainwright Funeral Home to Marietta where services will be Monday with the McClure Funeral Home in charge. ADAM HARPER, 103, DIES; RITES IN MARIETTA TODAY (Photo of Adam Harper with Obiturary) Funeral services for Adam HARPER, 103, of near Lowell, Washington county’s oldest living resident, will be held at 1 o’clock today at the Doundna and McClure funeral home in Marietta. Burial will be in Rainbow cemetery of near Lowell. Mr. HARPER died late Friday afternoon at the home of his niece, Mrs. Cora RUSH. He was born at Cadiz on July 3, 1854, the son of Joseph and Melinda SOVIL HARPER. Most of his early life was spent in Wetzel county, W. V. He was eleven when the Civil War ended. “Uncle Adam”, as he was known, was twice married. His firs wife, Isaphine CHANDLER, died and he later married Anna CURTIS, also deceased. He had no children, but leaves two stepsons, Laurence and Clesson CURTIS, who live in Columbus. A half-brother, Isac WOOTEN lives near Lowell and a half sister, Mrs. John MAYLE resides in Columbus. He had a number of nieces and nephews in the Zanesville area. He worked as a construction employe and had helped build the railroad between Zanesville and Marietta and was employed on the construction of the Muskingum dams at Lowell and Devola. He later managed a farm near Marietta and then moved to Parkersburg where he was a cement contractor for many years. It was 19 years ago, when 84, that he went to Lowell to live with his niece, Cora RUSH, and husband, Carl. Although he had no formal schooling, he kept abreast of developments by teaching himself to read. ALLEN DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS Mrs. Clara ALLEN, 81, of Dresdon, died Friday at Bethesda hospital where she had been a patient for the past two weeks. Born in Roxbury, Ohio, she was the daughter of Thomas and Maria Glen GATES. She had been an area resident for the past 15 years, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. Her husband, John Allen, died in 1930. Surviving are two brothers, Frank R. GATES, of Beverly, and Jesse GATES of Phoenix, Ariz., a sister, Miss Ruth A. GATES of Marietta, and a nephew, Howard GATES of Philadelphia, PA. Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the DeLong and Baker funeral home with Elder JEPSON officiating. SCHNAUFER of 205 Greenwood St. has received word of the death of his father, W. L. SCHNAUFER, 75, of Marietta. Mr. SCHNAUGFER died at his home on Monday.
