The Marietta Register Thursday, June 21, 1877 Pg. 2; Col. 2, 3, & 4 THE WORK OF TUESDAY The Republication Convention Tuesday was one of the best representations of the party in this county. The delegates present would be an honor to any party, and they represent well the intelligence, thrift, enterprise and political integrity of the four thousand and over--voters who will march to the polls next October to declare their will. Probably no previous convention has bee the offspring of a larger primary vote or more fully represented the “voice of the people,” of course this was not the result of the work of candidates. Save that done in the interest of the two gentlemen, one of whom was to be decided upon as Washington county’s choice for Common Pleas Judge, candidates had nothing to do with it, and the able and popular ticket presented to the people by the Convention was much more the result of the “office seeking the man” than of the men seeking office. That the delegates were chosen largely on the question of the judgeship, every one knows. In many, if tickets were run on this issue, and the close vote, 71 to 60, shows that neither candidate caught the other napping. Judge KNOWLES had the prestige of having done sell on the bench and the sympathy of a large acquaintance with whom the sentiment of a second term was powerful. these and other considerations fired the zeal of his numerous friends, moving them to make more that ordinary exertions for his success. The friends of H. L. SIBLEY, Esq., labored earnestly for his endorsement. They plead his character as a man, serves to the party, standing in the profession and fitness for the position. The arguments were not used in a disparaging sense toward his opponent, but as fully offsetting the claim to the office set up by his friends. The party will cheerfully abide by the expression of the convention and would have done so had it been pronounced for Mr. KNOWLES. It has no cause to disown either, but rather to be grateful to both. THE COUNTY TICKET For Representatives for the Convention selected J.M. MURDOCK, Esq., of Palmer township, and Sidney J. RIDGWAY, of Muskingum. Mr. MURDOCK made the canvass two years ago and was beaten by Hon. Gilbert SMITH, of Fairfield. He is a man of character, intelligence and information and on his superior fitness for the position should have received a large majority. Mr. RIDGWAY is a young man of through education, high character and ability. He has never been in politics, but is a candidate who will give credit to the party and standing to the county if elected to the Legislature. For Clerk of the Court, the almost unanimous vote given Mr. Geo. C. RACER, without his seeking for the place, gives expression to the estimation in which he is held by the party. Mr. RACER has no superior for the place in either party and is a Christian gentleman whose election will be a credit to the county. For Treasurer, Mr. John HOIST will give great satisfaction. He is a solid man and will make a popular run and satisfactory officer. He has been long a business man of our city and no one stands better for fair and square dealing. For Prosecuting Attorney, John A. HAMILTON was nominated with opposition. He is a zealous worker and successful young lawyer, at present of the firm of Chamberlain and Hamilton. Jno. A. PLUMER was nominated for Surveyor by acclamation. He is a good man and competent officer. It is not always that the services of so a good a man can be secured, and it is due to the county that his election be made certain. R.D. CAROTHERS, of Fairfield, was put in nomination for Commissioner over Mr. POOL, who was a candidate for renomination. Mr. POOL has made a good Commissioner and we did not see the wisdom of putting up a man against him. But he will not question the motives of the delegates, but rather congratulate them on nameing so good a man as Mr. CAROTHERS. For Infirmary Director, Stephen R. HILDRETH will be acknowledged to be a wise choice. He is a thrifty farmer, lives near the Infirmary, and will carefully watch its interests.
