All are of the Thursday Morning edition unless otherwise stated. Names are copied exactly as they appear in the newspaper. (I noticed some mispellings of names while I was doing this extraction and that many of the names were spelt as they sounded). WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO NEWS January 5, 1882 Joseph McVAY, of Newport township, recently died, of typhoid fever. He was about 60 years of age. John R. HILL of the same township also died in the same day. He was upwards of 70 years old. January 12, 1882 Mr. Harvey HOFFMAN, aged 59, of Matamoras, died of heart disease on the 2d inst. January 12, 1882 Robt. BARNES, Jr., of Independence township, died of typhoid pneumonia, recently. He was about 26 years old. January 12, 1882 John M. EELS, long the manager of the namufacturing department of the Marietta Chair Company, died on the morning of Jan. 4th. Mr. EELLS commenced a regular course at Oberlin College, with the purpose of entering the ministry. He was compelled to abandon his course by reason of hailing health, and to seek more active employment in Marietta, whee his life labor has been spent. He is universally respected and beloved. He is the third deacon of Dr. HAWK”S Congregational Church, in Marietta, called hence within a few months. Thursday, Jan. 19, 1882 Mr. James P. HANEY died at his home on the west side of the Muskingum river, near Devol’s Dam, recently, in the 74th year of his age. Thursday, Jan. 19, 1882 Capt. Josiah HENDERSON died at his home in Belpre, the 9th inst. Capt. HENDERSON, was one of the early settlers, being born Sept. 18, 1800. January 26, 1882 Mr. Jacob THEIS, of Fearing, died recently, aged 73 years. January 26, 1882 A. B. CRANE, of Williamstown, died recently at the Athens Asylum. January 26, 1882 Mrs. Doratha SALBAUGH, formerly of Watertown township, died in Richmond, Ind., Jan. 11, in her 64th year. January 26, 1882 Recently in Salem township, Miss Mary, daughter of Hugh and Isabelle WILSON, died aged 24 years and 27 days. January 26, 1882 A young man by the name of Abner MEAD was recently drowned in the creek a short distance below Scott Town. February 2, 1882 John HESS, aged about 23(28), died of consumption on the 20th ult., in Aurelius township. February 2, 1882 Mrs. Mary, wife of Capt. J. B. DANIELS, of Harmar, died early Sunday morning of last week, after an illness of several weeks. February 2, 1882 The wife, age 45, of Mr. Chas. KNAPP, of Marietta, died at her late home in that city on Tuesday of last week, of an ailment peculiur to females. February 9, 1882 L. G. DUGAN, of Dunham, died Jan. 26th, of typhoid fever aged 26 years. February 9, 1882 Mrs. Margaret NEEDHAM, wife of Mr. Stephen NEEDHAM, of Dunham township, died January 27th, aged 84 years. February 9, 1882 Mr. John MILLER, of Watertown, recently died. The deceased was in his 89th year and had been blind about six years. February 16, 1882 The wife of Joseph L. STEPHENS, of Marietta, recently died, quite suddenly, of neuralgis of the heart. February 16, 1882 Mrs. Elizabeth DYE, in her 74th year, was found dead in bed at her home in Lawrence township. February 23, 1882 Michael TORPY, father of Sheriff TORPY, of this county, died at the beginning of last week in his 81st year. February 23, 1882 Alvin RECKARD, a well known citizen of Marietta, who was stricken with apoplexy, on Tuesday of last week, died on Thursday. February 23, 1882 Samuel CAYWOOD, better known all over the county as “uncle Sammy” died recently at his home near Marietta, aged 82 years. February 23, 1882 Walter BRABHAM, Esq., an old and well known member of the legal profession, at Marietta, died at his late home in that city, one day last week, after protracted illness. February 23, 1882 Chas. MEYER, who was a patient in the Athen Saylum for the Insane, from Marietta, recently committed sucide in that institutuion, by hanging himself. The deed was done in his room with a small cord which he tied to the hinge of the door. February 23, 1882 Col. David ALBAN, Prosecuting Attorney of this county, was found dead in this bed at his late home in Marietta, on Wednesday evening of last week. Feeling unwell he had retired to bed during the day and his sudden death was probably the result of heart trouble. March 2, 1882 William COBB, who went from Coal Run to Bellaire, two years ago, was fatally injured while at work in the Heathering Coal Mine of that place recently. March 2, 1882 Charls P LAUB, of Marietta, who has been missing, since Monday of last week, was found in the mud left by the back water on Third street, near the railroad trestle in that city. It is supposed he tried to ford the street, and the water being too deep he fell from his horse and was drewned. March 9, 1882 Mrs. Maria E. BUCK died, Monday of last week, at the home of her daugher, Mrs. GRABE, in Harmar. She was wpwards of 89 years old. March 9, 1882 Last Monday about noo Mrs. Barbara ROEMER, aged fifty-one, a widow with one child, was found dead in her kitchen, in the rear of her bar room, on Ohio street, Marietta. The Coroner returned a verdict of death from congestion of the lungs superinduced by intemperance. She had probably been dead nearly twenty-four hours when discovered. March 16, 1882 Valmer BROWN, of Newport township, recently died unexpectedly. March 16, 1882 Joel HILDERBRAND, aged 80 years, died March 2d, at his home in Fearing township. March 16, 1882 Peter J. GEARHART died in Marietta, last Thrusday, after a lingering illness, of consumption. March 23rd-- Peter J. GERHART, aged 56, of Marietta, recently died of lung disease, after protracted sickness, at his late home in that city. March 16, 1882 Booth RUSK, a graduate of Marietta College, of the class of 1880, recently died at the home of his brother, Rev. John RUSK, in Cincinnati, of quick consumption. March 23, 1882 Mr. Geo. W. WELLS, aged 69, who has for many years been a resident of Marietta, died, at his home in that city of paralysis, one day last week. March 23, 1882 Colonel John MILLS died at his home in Marietta, one day last week, aged eight-six years. He was born in that city, and his life had been identified with its development. He was, at the First National Bank, President of the Marietta Chair Company and Marietta Gas Company, and to him was due the inception of the Marietta and Cincinnati railroad. March 30, 1882 An old and well known citizen, of Marietta, named Grayson MEDICOTT age 18(81), died quite suddenly of heart disease in that city, on Wednesday morning of last week. March 30, 1882 Phil. KING, a young man well known in Marietta, and connected with Cadwalader’s photograph gallery, in that city, died, very suddenly of a hemorrhage, Tuesday morning of last week. April 6, 1882 Frederick BOESHAER, of Lower Salem, lately died, suddenly, on a railroad train when approaching Marietta. April 6, 1882 A little son of Mr. and Mrs. John WEHRUM, of Warren township, died, recently aged nearly five years. April 6, 1882 Mrs. Belinda B. REED, wife of D. M. REED, or Harmar, died, Friday evening 24th ult. She as about 50 years old. April 6, 1882 Chas. Blake, of Lower Salem, who went to Colorado, last summer, for his health, died at Colorado Springs, on the 21st inst. April 6, 1882 Philip E. MARSH, aged 36, of Marietta, recently died at Columbus where he had been at work in the Hocking Valley R. R. Shops. April 6, 1882 Mrs. Eunice ANDERSON, late of Marietta, died quite suddenly. She had been a resident of that city and was quite well known of the older residents. Her age was seventy-eight years. April 6, 1882 alexander POSEY, of Little Muskingum, died, very suddenly, about two o’clock Tuesday morning of last week. He woke up and complained to his wife of a smothering sensation and died in a few minutes. He was 74 years old. April 13, 1882 Mrs. Jos. WOOD, died Sunday of last week at her home near Waterford. April 13, 1882 Mrs. Alfretta JACK, daughter of Mr. John HILL, died Tuessday morning, of last week, of consumption, at the home of her parents, on Seventh street, Marietta. April 20, 1882 Mrs. Nathan BELL, of Newport township died, recently. April 20, 1882 Ephriam GOULD, of Salem Township, died the 8 inst., aged 76 years. Apri in her 90th year. She came with her parents to Marietta in 1795 and resided there until her death. April 20, 1882 An old lady named Catharine HIGHLAND died at Marietta, Wednesday night of last week,aged over one hundered years. Hrs. HIGHLAND was a native of Ireland, but had resided in this country for the past thirty years. April 27, 1882 Hon John HADDOW, ex-Representative, died, suddenly, of heart disease at his home in Barlow, one day last week. April 27, 1882 Mrs. Eliza, aged 78, widow of the late G. W. BAILEY, of Warren, died, one day last week. their deaths occurred about a week apart. May 4, 1882 Johnson, son of ‘Squire Wm. JOHNSON, died in Warren , April 22, aged twenty-eight years. May 4, 1882 P. J. OLNEY, an old citizen, died at his residence on the Newport pike, near Marietta, Sunday of last week of brain disease. May 4, 1882 John TIDD, an old resident of this county, died in Macon county, Illinois, April 20, aged ninety-one years. His remains were brought to Harmar for interment. May 11, 1882 The wife of Jas. F. PUTNAM, Esq., of Lowell, died lately, as the result of Maternity. May 11, 1882 Mr. John SWAYNE who, recently removed with his wife and child from Wesley to Corning, died lately at that place with typhoid fever. Mrs. Emma, wife of Mr. J. CUNNINGHAM, died of consumption, Sunday of last week, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. CARLIN, of Barlow. May 11, 1882 Mrs. Mary SCHAFER, of Little Muskingum, died April 26th, aged about 65 years and on the same day Mrs. Hester A. TARBIN, of Beverly, died, aged 59 years. May 11, 1882 Mrs. Mary Ann FLETCHER, of Belpre, aged 76 years, died, bery suddenly, on Friday, April 28th. Her husband, Shereblah, was a soldier in the Revolution, for which servcice the widow drew a pension. May 11, 1882 Miss Maggie M. duaghter of Mr. Thos. ROBERTSON, late Master Mechanic at the C. & M. R. R. shops, Marietta, died very suddenly, at her home on Greene street, Sunday morning, of last week, of hemorrage of the lungs. She was about 15 years old. June 1, 1882 Mrs Mary aTHEY died at her home in Marietta township on May 17th, in the 76th year of her age. June 1, 1882 Miss Minnie, daughter of Frederick SPENCER aged about 17 years recently died at her late home in Elba of consumption. June 1, 1882 Mrs. Kate DOWLE, whose hisband was buried recently, died last Sunday, at her hime in Vincent. This is the fourth death in the same family within a year. June 1, 1882 Mrs. Lavinia HOFF, a resident of Cow Run, was found dead, Tuesday afternoon of last week, near her house. She had for years been subject to fits, and they had lately increased in number and violence and her death was evidently the result of one of her usual attacks. June 8, 1882 Mrs. Catherine TUPPER, relict of the late Cyrus MERIAM, born in Marietta in 1803, recently died, at her late home in Zanesville. June 15, 1882 Mrs. Nancy BAKER, in her 78th year, recently died at her late home in Matamoras. June 15, 1882 Mr. Terrence McKENNA, of Ludlow township, died Monday morning of last week. He was about 80 years old. June 15, 1882 Mary McCAULEY, an aged lady inmate of the Washington Coutny Infirmary, recently died at that institution. June 15, 1882 George BEARNHARDT, aged 56, a well known citizen of Marietta was found dead in his bed, last Friday morning. Heart disease. June 15, 1882 Miss Merideth FREED, daughter of Adam FREED, of Warren, died Wednesday morning, of last week, of Typhoid fever, aged 20 years. June 15, 1882 Mr. Paul SMITH, of Barlow, who recently died, was one of the first settlers of that township, where he passed the greater part of his life. June 22, 1882 David BOWMAN, of Dunbar, died, of consumption, on the 8th(?), aged forty-seven years and six months. June 22, 1882 Mrs. Jane CARPENTER, a respected resident of Harmar, was found dead in her bed, Wednesday morning of last week. June 22, 1882 Mrs. Esther A. wife of Jacob FISKE, who removed three months since from Marietta to Missouri, recently died of cancer of the bowels. June 22, 1882 Mrs Lizzie WILEY KELLY, aged 27, the wife of T. H. KELLEY, Esq., of Cincinnati, and daughter of Arthur WILEY of Columbus, formerly Marietta, died at her home Sunday evening of last week, and her remains were interred at Marietta on the following Wednesday. She had been married only a year and her untimely death was caused wide spread sorrw among a numerous circle of warm friends. July 27, 1882 Mrs. J. P. COOK, a well known resident of Newport, died, recently. July 27, 1882 Ephriam TRUE, of Lower Salem, recently died of consumption, aged about 46 years. July 27, 1882 Alexander CASSELL, a well known and esteemed elderly citizen of Lowell, recently died. July 27, 1882 James MERCER, of Warren, died at his home, Sunday evening of last week. He was stricken with paralysis about five months ago from which he never recovered. He was about 65 years of age. July 27, 1882 Fortunate COOK who lived in Marietta from about 1827 until a year or so ago, died at Zanesville, recently, aged about 90 years. She was a noted fortune teller and was oftern visited for consultation by persons from a long distance who were solicitous regarding their futurity. August 3, 1882 Calvin FINCH, an aged citizen of Scott’s Landing, died Sunday of last week. August 3, 1882 the widow of the late James McGUIRE died at Belpre, Sunday of last week, of cancer. August 3, 1882 John SPRINGER, who lately died at the Washington County Infirmary, claimed to be 108 years old. August 3, 1882 James MERCER, of Warren, died recently, aged 63 year. He was stricken with paralysis several months ago. August 3, 1882 Newell MURGRIGE, formerly of Marietta, recently dropped dead in a drug store, at Gallipolis. He was about 38 years old. August 3, 1882 Mrs. Maria, wife of Capt. Dennis O’LEARY, of Marietta, died, early Sunday morning of last week, after a protracted illness, aged 55 years. August 3, 1882 John M. SLOCOMB, formerly of Marietta, and father of Mrs. Henry LORD, of that city, died at Kansas City, Missouri, July 23d, in the 71st year of his age. Aug. 10, 1882 Mrs. J. W. VAN METRE, a well known resident of Belpre, died, Wednesday of last week, after brief illness, of cholera morbus. Aug. 10, 1882 Stephen BACON, late of Warren, where he leaves a family, was killed on a recent day by a falling derrick at Henderson, Ky. August 17, 1882 Chas. L. MAGRUDER, formerly of Marietta, refently died n Indianapolis. August 17, 1882 Jacob SCHNEIDER, of Bonn, Salem township, recently died of consumption. He was about 60 years old. August 17, 1882 Mrs Franz WILKING, Jr., lately died, at Lowell, of consumption. She was about 21 years old and leaves two children. August 17, 1882 Miss Flora HANSON late a patient in the Athens Asylum from Warner, This county, recently died in that institution. August 17, 1882 Mrs. Maggie SINCLAIR, wife of Councilman J. B. SINCLAIR, of Marietta, was buried Sunday of last week. She died in child-birth. August 17, 1882 The Leader says that Mrs. Nancy GAREN, who died July 18th, was a pioneer woman of this county, having been brought to this State in 1803, when but one year old. August 31, 1882 Mrs. Nancy MARTIN, wife of Mr. Z. MARTIN, of Stanleyville, died, recently, aged 61 years. August 31, 1882 Miss Ella, daughter of Mr. Dudley POSEY, of Fultonburg, died, Saturday afternoon, 19th inst., of consumption, aged about 24 years. August 31, 1882 At Marietta, Thursday evening, Willie, a seven year old son of Jacob SCHULTHEISS, fell from a barge near the mill into the Muskingum, at five o’clock and was drowned. August 31, 1882 Mrs. Sarah J. BRADDOCK, of Marietta, died, recently, aged 85 years. The deceased was one of the odlest citizens of Marietta and was born on the ocean when coming from Irept. 21, 1882 Samuel R. SMITH, who died in Belpre Sept. 1st, deserves mention. He was born in that place, Feb. 17, 1796, and had lived near his birthplace all his life. He had been a member of the Universalist church 25 or 30 years and was a quiet, honest, industrious citizen. September 28, 1882 Miss Lizzie DITZEL, of Harmar, died recently, of inflammation of the bowels. September 28, 1882 The death of John VINCENT, of Vincent Station, removes an old and valuable citizen. His wife survives him and arrangements had been made for the cemebration of their golden wedding this month. October 12, 1882 Mrs. Elizabeth ANDREWS died in Fearing township, Sept. 29th, aged 93 years, 9 months and 20 days. October 12, 1882 Mr. Daniel HOPP, who lived near Elba, died very Suddenly, September 30th. It was thought to be heart disease. October 12, 1882 Wilson COOPER, a six-year man from Washington county, died in the Penitentiary, last week, of consumption. He had been insane for some time. October 12, 1882 Eff DAVIS, son of C. C. DAVIS, died at his home on Third street in Marietta on a recent day of palpitation of the heart. He was a young man possessing many excellent qualities, and was but twenty-five years old at the time of his death. October 19, 1882 Mrs. Mary FLANNERY died very suddenly at her residence in Warren township, recently, in the 60th year of her age. October 12, 1882 John REMEMY, father of A. W. REMELEY, of Watertown, who retired in his usual health, on a recent night, was found in his bed on the following morning in an unconscious condition, supposed to have bee caused by a paralytic stroke. Since died. October 26, 1882 Mrs. Charles PERRY, of Wesley Township, died, on Tuesday of last week, after an illness of several months, of consumption, aged about 30 years. October 26, 1882 Mr. Abner WOODRUFF, an aged and wealthy citizen of Belpre, fell down stairs, on a recent night, and was injured so severely that he died the day following. October 26, 1882 Near Marietta, last Friday, Wm. BABOLD, a teamster, was instantly killed by falling from a threshing machine and under the wheels, cause by the wagon tilting in a rut in the road. the owner of the machine, Benjamin BRAGG, was also thrown off and recieived a broken leg. November 2, 1882 Hohn BRECKENRIDGE, of Palmer, died, Sunday of last week, aged 84 years. November 2, 1882 Mrs. Julia R. BRIGHAM an elderly and much respected lady, of Marietta, recently deid. November 2, 1882 Miss Ida PETTY, eldest daughter of Henry and Nancy PETTY, of the village of Gracey, recently died, of consumption, aged fourteen years. November 2, 1882 Joseph FLEMING, who is remembered by many citizens of Washington coutny, brother of Prter FLEMING, of Ludlow township, died at his residence in Winona county, Minnesota lately. November 9, 1882 Several members of Mrs. John SCHUFF’s family, at Marietta, having died lately of thyphoid fever, she imagined she had the same disease, and in spite of all her physicians could do, grew worse and died from fright. November 16, 1882 William SPIES, of Lowell, died on a recent day, of consumption. November 16, 1882 Garfield HICKMAN, a promising young man, died at Marietta, recently of typhoid fever. November 16, 1882 A tombstone in the cemetery at Layman, this county, bears this inscription” Sacred to teh memory of Wm. DUNBAR, a soldier of the Revolutionary war, who died in the 112th year of his age.” His son, aged nearly 100, died at Layman last spring. November 23, 1882 The venerable mother of Colonel I. B. KINKEAD was buried at Marietta, on day last week. She was an old resident of the county. November 23, 1882 Mrs. Elizabeth ENOCHS, of Belpre, an inmate of the Athens Asylum, died, in that institutions recently. Her remains were taken to Belpre for interment. November 23, 1882 Mrs. Charles RATHBONE, of Belpre, was buried, on day last week, she having died suddenly, after a few moments sickness. A post mortem showed that apoplexy was the cause. November 23, 1882 The remains of Miss Rose EATON, who died in Cincinnati of hast consumption, were brought to Marietta and buried from the residence of her grandmother, Mrs. Mary ATKINSON, on a recent day. November 30, 1882 Mrs. James FLAUNDERS, of Harmar, who has been an invalid for sometime, died, suddenly, on Sunday morning , of dropsy. November 30, 1882 A colored child named ARMSTRONG whose parents live at Devol’s Dam, while playing with fire was burned to death one day last week. December 7, 1882 A man named Neil KOONTS, of Barlow, dropped dead on Thanksgiving day while at work near his home. December 7, 1882 Fred. E. REARCE, Esq., aged 51, a former well known citizen of Marietta, died at Euclare, Wisconsin, recently, of pneumonia. December 7, 1882 Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. McKINNEY, of Marietta, died, on day last week, of something like inflammation of the bowels. She was nine years old on the 14th of May last and was a very sweet and interesting little girl. December 7, 1882 Captian Hiram BIRCH, the oldest pilot on the Ohio River, died, at his home in Marietta, at the beginning of last week. He was pilot on the Washington when it exploded opposite Mariett in 1816, and the Harry Dean when it exploded in 1868. sicne that time he has not been on the river. December 14, 1882 Mr. John WILLIAMS, of Decatur, dropped down and died instantly in Dunham, Nov. 26th. December 14, 1882 The recent sudden death of Cornelius COOTS, mention of which was made in oour Washington county items, last week, is referred to as the fourth very sudden death that has occurred in Barlow within the past year. December 21, 1882 Mrs. Fannie, wife of Mr. Geo. KNOX, of Harmar, died, quite suddenly, Sunday night of last week. December 21, 1882 The funeral of W. H. DEMING took place at his late residence in Watertown, Friday morning. He shot himself with a carbine, about 7 o’clock, Tuesday morning. December 21, 1882 Dr. J. B. SPRAGUE, a native of Washington county, where he was born in 1826, and from which he removed in 1863, recently died, at his late home in Springfield, Ill., of typhoid fever. December 28, 1882 Daniel DRAIN, one of the oldest citizens of Dunham, died, Sunday of last week. Hes age was about 75 years. December 28, 1882 Mrs. Hester GRANT, wife of the late Graydon MEDLICOTT, in her 74th year recently died at her late residence in Marietta. She was very highly esteemed. February 1, 1883 Lydia, wife of Mr. Wesley SHIRRES, of Beverly, died at her home, Monday of last week, quite suddenly. February 1, 1883 Lewis HOON, a bachelor farmer living near lake Chute, this county, was killed on day last week by a tree falling on him. February 1, 1883 On a recent day Chas. COOKE, a resident of the village of Newport, this county, was shot and killed by John DANA.--COOK under the influnence of liquor was, it is said, abusing his daughter, a young woman, when DANA interfered and being pursued by COOK drew a pistol and fired three times at the latter, two of the shots taking fatal effect. DANA has been held to answer in the sum of five hundred dollars. The Marietta Times referring to this tragedy says: COOK had a violent temper when under the influence of liquor, and therefore the people of Newport are said to be with DANA. But we cannot see why COOK’S bad temper should justify DANA in carring a revolver, and taking it with him to COOK’s house to settle a family dispute. The case, however, will receive a thorough investigation by the grand jury next week. February 15th-- The Grand Jury indicted John DANA, who shot and killed Chas. H. COOK at Newport, for murder in the second degree. February 8, 1883 Mrs. HALL of Coal run, died, Wednesday of last week. She was about 80 years old. They were taken and placed in the Children’s Home. May 12, 1887 Conductor Samuel BELL, of the M. C. & N. railroad, was thrown under the train while switching at Marietta, last Saturday, and had both legs cut off and subsequently died as a result. He took the place of J. E. May 19, 1887 Michael BURNS, a well known young man, formerly a coal miner but for some time back engaged as brakeman on the C. & M. railroad, was instantly killed, one day last week, near Byesville. He was standing on the platform of a coach, looking back to see another train which was following, when a timber of a bridge struck and knocked him into Wills Creek, killing him instantly. LAVELLE, of Belpre, committed suicide on the afternoon of the 4th, by drowning. His mind had been unbalanced for sometimes. His body was found ten feet from the shore in shallow water. July 21, 1887 A. B. SERENE, formerly a resident of Marietta, and who has recently died, left $2,000 life insurance in the A. O. U. W. Association which his widow has realized. July 21, 1887 Mrs. Nancy WIKOFF, the aged mother of General A. T. WIKOFF, of Marietta, died at her home in Rome, Adams county, Wednesday morning, of last week. She was about 87 years old. July 21, 1887 On Saturday evening last, at Marietta, an itinerant boot black named Nelson HOLLOND from Cambridge, shot William P. ANCELL, a boy five years of age, in the abdomen, from the effects of which ANCELL died last Sunday evening. The boys wee playing in the park, and HOLLAND claims he found the revolver. HOLLAND seems to be quite a colored tramp, having been all over the continent, and at one time visited Europe. He is now in jail in default of $2,000 bail to await his trial on a charge of manslaughter. July 28, 1887 Elisha NEEDS, aged 33, of Bear Run, recently died suddenly at the result of drinking cold water while overheated. July 28, 1887 Mrs. Martha HEWSON died at the residence of Robert LOVE, of Liberty township, on Sunday morning of last week aged 87 years. July 28, 1887 Mrs. Pemberton PALMER, who accompanied her husband to Marietta last week to attend the Washingtn County Rwpublican Convention, was fatally sticken with apoplexy while there. August 4, 1887 Mr. John QUINN, of Warren, died recently of typhoid fever. He was about 42 years of age and was a bachelor. August 4, 1887 Gertrude GUNTER, daughter of Rev. GUNTER, of Newport, was, says the Marietta Register, drowned in the Ohio river, Wednesday evening, while in bathing. She was in the river with her brother and sister and both girls got beyond their depth. The boy, aged 12, who is a plcky little swimmer, rescued the younger sister but was unable to save the elder, and was obliged to see her drown. WILLIAMS were, says the Marietta Register, greatly shocked at the news of her death, which occurred on Nov. 3d, at Topeka, Kan., while on a visit to her son, O. E. WILLIAMS. December 1, 1887 Mrs. Caroline PETERS, widow of Jacob PETERS, died at her home in Marietta on Sunday of last week, of stricture of the bowels. December 1, 1887 James LONGSTRETH, who was sent to the penitentiary for fifteen years in 1876, for burning the house of Mr LEASURE, of Belpre, in which two week-minded children were burned to deaht, was pardoned by Governor Foraker, recently. LONGSTRETH was convicted on circumstantial evidence and many who heard the trial gave grave doubts of his guilt. December 8, 1887 Daniel REMLEY, near Dunbar, died Nov. 30, at the age of about 80 years. December 8, 1887 Timothy CONE one of the best known citizens, of Marietta, died, of paralysis, on Saturday. January 5, 1888 Mr. Daniel WEIS, aged 51, died at his home on Christmas morning, after a lingering illness of cancerous tuburcles on the intestines. January 5, 1888 Benj. F. GILPIN, of Muskingum, died very suddenly on the night of the 24th ult. He was nearly seventy-four years of age and has lived in Muskingum township sixty-three years. January 5, 1888 Jeff. ARROWSMITH, about thirty-five years old, in the employ of C. C. KETTER, merchant tailor, at Marietta, was found dead Wednesday morning of last week under the C. W. & b. railroad bridge at that place. He was seen late the night before under the influence of liquor while on his way to cross the bridge for his home in Harmar. He evidently staggered off the trestle-work, falling a distance of twenty-five feet, striking on his face and completely crushing it in, which cause instant death. He leaves a wife and two small children. January 12, 1888 Mr. Ira CADY, one of the oldest, best known and most higly respected citizens of Independence township, died Saturday, Dec. 24th. NYE, of Marietta was the last surviving son of the pioneers who landed at the site of that city, August 19th, 1788. POWERS died recently, at the home of his son Stephen, at Lawtey, Florida, and his remains were brought to his old home near Waterford, from whence the funeral took place. April 5, 1888 Mr. Isaac SPAULDING, of Harmar, died Monday night of last week, of kidney disease. He was born in Masachussetts in 1807 and came to Harmar in 1840. April 5, 1888 As we go to press, says the Marietta Leader of last week, we learn that the Italians working on the Z. & O., south of Waterford, got into a drunken row, Sunday last, and in the fight one Italian was killed, his throat being cut from ear to ear. April 12, 1888 Miss Flora, the oldest daughter of John KUNZ, corner of Fifth and Warren streets, Marietta, died very suddenly Monday, moring of last week. She has been subject to epileptic fits for many years. April 19, 1888 Shortly afternoon on Wednesday of last week Mr. Benjamin F. COGGSWELL, of Little Muskingum, fell dead in his barn, of heart disease, while loading some hay. He was about 65 years of age. April 19, 1888 Mrs Abbie F. April 26, 1888 Mr. John SMITHSON, aged 59, who was born in Aurelius township, Washington county, and always lived there until about the year 1867, recently died at his late home in Dexter City, Ohio April 26, 1888 About seven weeks since, Dr. I. W. ANDREWS ex-President of Marietta College went on an Eastern trip in the interest of the 7th of April celebration and to visit relatives. When he reached his brother at Hartford, Conn., he was taken sick and granually grew worse, until Wednesday of last week, when he was relieved by death. May 3rd--- The late ex President ANDREWS of Marietta, College whose recent death at Hartford, Conn., was mentioned in the Messenger of last week, was directly descended, in the eighth generation, from William ANDREWS, one of the original settlers of New Haven. May 31st--- The late President I. W. ANDREWS, of Marietta, had $9,000 insurance on his life. May 3, 1888 Mr. Chas. McVEY, of Newport township, died, Sunday of last week, of cancer of the stomach, aged 72 years. May 3, 1888 Mrs. Ruth MORRIS died at the Woman’s Home, in Marietta, April 30th. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1796, and for thirty years has been a resident of Washington county. May 10, 1888 Ex-County Recorder, James NIXON, recently died at his home near Beverly, aged 50 years. He lost a leg durning the war, which ultimately caused his death. May 17, 1888 Harry DICKSON, a freight brakeman on the R. & O. Ky., was run over and killed at Mineral siding, four miles east of Cambridge, last Saturday night. He was about twenty-tow year of age, unmarried, and lived at Beverly, when at home. May 17, 1888 Mrs. Eliza JENNINGS widow of the late Junia JENNINGS, died at the home of her son, Will. H. JENNINGS, in Columbus, at half-past nine o’clock, Monday evening of last week. She was in the 78th year of her age. Her remains were brought to Marietta for burial. May 24, 1888 Mrs. Joseph SCHOFIELD recently died at her late home at Whipple, this county. May 24, 1888 Edward W. DAVIS died at his late home in Marietta, Saturday the 12th inst., aged 88 years. His wife, who is 86 years old, survives him. May 31, 1888 William RILEY, a farmer living on Sand Hill, died Tuesday morning of last week, after brief illness, aged 77 years. He was born in 1811 in Washington county, where he as always lived. June 7th-- Mr. William RILEY, a much respected farmer of Sand Hill, died recently aged 77 years. June 7, 1888 Mrs. Calista W. WRIGHT recently died at her late home near Lower Salem, aged nearly 73. The deceased was a resident of Washington county all her life. June 7, 1888 Recently, Mr. Phillip HANSHUMAKER, of Matamoras, died of consumption. He was a successful merchant and a highly respected citizen. He was about 55 years old. June 7, 1888 Capt. C. P. BUCK, aged about 45, proprietor of the Buckeye Pump Works at Belpre, died at his late home in that place on Wednesday of last week after protracted illness of heart disease and consumption. June 14, 1888 Mr. Davis ALLEN recently died at his late home in Little Hocking, aged 87. He was a relative of Ex-Governor Wm. ALLEN, and it is said that they looked and acted very much alike. June 21, 1888 Mrs. Daniel CONLEY, of Vincent, died, recently, after a lingering illness. She was about 40 years of age. June 21, 1888 Mr. Ezra PERKINS, an old and respected citizen of Washington county, died as this home near Whipple, Sunday of last week at the advanced age of 96 (86) years. June 21, 1888 Mr. Samuel MILLER, aged 67, a well known butcher of Warren township, Washington county, was injured recently by his horse being knocked from under him by a steer that he was trying to head off. He fell on his head with such force that concussuon of the brain was produced. He died shortly after. June 28, 1888 John HOHAUS, of Whipple, died Sunday of last week of typhoid fever. He and family had formerly lived in Nebraska, and had recently returned to Whipple. June 28, 1888 Robert JACKSON, of Salem township, died Wednesday of last week, of stomach and lung trouble, aged about sixty years. June 28, 1888 Mr. Hanson DUTTON, one of the early settlers of Aurelius township, but for some years a resident of Lowell died recently, aged 88. June 28, 1888 The father of Mrs. General A. J. WARNER, of Marietta, recently died at his late home in New York State. July 12, 1888 Mrs. Lydia N. BARBER died in Harmar, recently, aged 82 years. She had been sick about six years. July 12, 1888 Dr. Ethan ALLEN, Sr., of Harmar died Monday morning, of last week. His funeral took place Tuesday afternoon. He was 76 years old. July 12, 1888 Mr. John DONALDSON, aged about sixty years, died at his home in Lawrence township, tuesday, of last week. He was a soldier in the late war. July 12, 1888 Mr. C. W. PYLE, lately died at his home in Decatur, Washington county, after a number of months of very panful throat trouble, which caused him to almost starve to death. July 19, 1888 Nancy C., the eleven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. GIBSON, of Harmar, died Sunday morning of last week of consumption. July 19, 1888 Jacob LAUER, Sr., of Salem township died recently of dropsy. He was almost ?? (80) years old, and was one of the quickest mathematiacs of the county. July 19, 1888 Mrs. Hattie RHODES HARRIS, died at her home in St. Louis, Sunday morning of last week, after a short illness. She was a daughter of the late Judge C. R. RHODES, of Marietta and was an accomplished lady. July 19, 1888 Conrad IMMEL, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of Dye’s P. O., died, recently, of consumption, aged seventy-five years. He was a Christian gentleman and has long been a resident of Washington county. July 26th--- Conrad IMMEL, an old and respected citizen of Dye, died July 3d, of consumption. He was seventy-five years old. July 26, 1888 Mrs. F. W. MORSE died at her home in Marietta, Monday of last week, of asthma. July 26, 1888 Mrs. Thomas BEARDMORE, of Salem township, died, Monday of last week, aged 66 years. July 26, 1888 At an early hour last Friday morning, one Andy REED, who lives at Layman, Washington county, in attempting to board a train on the M. C. & N. railrosd on the bridge at Harmar, was knocked into the Muskingum river and drowned. August 2, 1888 Mr. John C. MALACH, formerly counected with the drug business in Marietta lately died at his home in Ashland, Ky., of typhold fever. August 2, 1888 Dr. John F. CONGDON, of Marietta, a printer, who for several years has been leading a life of dissipation and debauchery, put an end to his existence, last Saturday night, by taking a half-ounce dose of morhpine. He was a young man thirty-five years old. August 2, 1888 The death of Mr. Geo. P. DYE at his late home in Marietta, last Saturday, was unexpected by his friends. Apparently robust it was a surprise that he should be sticken down so soon. His funeral was from the house, last Monday, conducted by the Masonic order. August 2, 1888 Rev. D. E. BEACH, D. D., professor of moral and intellectual philosophy in the Marietta college, died, one day last week, after a brief illness. Prof. BEACH graduated in 1859, served as pastor at Beloit, Mich., two years; was with the Presbyterian church at Granville from 1864 to 1869, and since then a professor at Marietta. He was a man of rare qualities and a favorite with the students, faculty and community. His age was about 55 years. He leaves a wife and three sons. August 9, 1888 Mr. John SLOBOHM, aged 82, recently died at his late home in Heslop, this county. August 9, 1888 Albert E. COULTER, the second son of May Josiah COULTER, died at his late home in Marietta, last Thursday, of typhoid fever. He was twenty-two years of age, was a particularly bright and useful young man, had many friends wherever known, and his loss will be keenly felt. Aug. 16th-- Albert E., second son of Mayor Josiah COULTER, of Marietta, died at his home on Second street in that city recently of typhoid fever with which he was taken on the 16th of last month. August 9, 1888 It is noted that those who partook of the College Alumni dinner at Marietta on the 27th of June at least more than twenty have been seriously ill with typhoid fever, of these three have died, viz: Prof. BEACH, Geo. H. DYE, and Frank H. CHAMBERLAIN, the death of the latter taking place last Sunday evening. August 16, 1888 Miss Laura ISRAEL, of Beverly, died of typhoid fever Sunday of last week. FRANKHAUSER, aged 24, who graduated from Marietta College in June last, died at the residence of Mr. A. S. D. EWING, on Wooster street in Marietta, Tuesday afternoon of last week of typhoid fever. His home was in Monroe county, near Sardis. COLE, of Harmar, died at Lincoln, Nebraska, recently. August 23, 1888 Margaret, wife of Joseph CALDWELL, Sr., died at her home in Marietta, Sunday morning of last week of the infirmities incident to old age. She was in her 87th year. August 23, 1888 Dr. M. J. NEISWANDER, of Macksburg, a physician of long experience and well known, died at his home, Sunday night of last week, of typhoid fever. He was about fifty years of aged, and leaves a wife and one child. August 23, 1888 Hannibal A. WILLIAMSON, of the class of ‘83, who died at his late home in Grandview, last Saturday afternoon, in the eighth victim who met his death as the result of partaking of the alumni dinner at Marietta college on the 27th of last June. A number of others are expected to die from the same mysterious cause. August 23, 1888 Of Prof. John D. PHILLIPS, the sixth victim of the late fatal alumni dinner of Marietta College, whose death was briefly mentioned in last week’s Messenger, the Marietta Times says: PHILLIPS was a graduate of Marietta College of the class of 1858, and his life ever since that period has been devoted as a teacher of the public schools of this city, and latterly of the public schools of Harmar, and he was at the time of his death one of the school examiners. His character as a teacher was of the highest order, and his loss as a citizen, frined, and educator, will be deeply felt among all calsses. August 30, 1888 Mr. Jacob STEIN, of Whipple, died Monday of last week of cholera morbus. He was in usual health Saturday. His age was 73. August 30, 1888 Mr. Godfried HECKLER, of Indian Run, Muskingum township, died on Sunday, of last week, aged 85 years and 5 months. September 6, 1888 Mr. John TYSON recently died, at his home in Beverly of fux. He was about sixty years of age. HARVEY, of Fleming. the immediate cause of her death was premature child birth, brought on by an accident in getting out of a buggy. October 4, 1888 Mr. Seymour CLOUGH, of Belpre township, recently died, in the 73d year of his age. October 4, 1888 Wallace, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis SPIES, died Sunday morning of last week, of flux, aged about 20 years.
