CIVIL WAR - FALLEN SOLDIERS FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO Taken from The History of Washington Co., Ohio 1778-1881 by H. Z. Williams (Partial List - 624 Names) Also contains an ADDENDA of this database. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING: More than 4000 men from Washington County, Ohio served in the Civil War. Some men came home to their families, but many did not. Listed below, are 624 fallen soldiers, of the many brave men, from Washington County that died during the Civil War. This is only a partial list. There are more men from Wash. Co. that died during the war that what is listed here. These are the ones that I have found in the book, History of Washington County, Ohio 1781-1888, by H. Z. Williams. I chose to extract only the names that was stated in the book and listed as "died", "killed", "mortally wounded" or "missing". The complete list of men who died can be seen at the Recorders Office in Washington County, Ohio, and on microfilm at the Washington Co. Historical & Genealogy Library. One thing to keep in mind is that many men did not die on the battlefield. Some died days, weeks, months, and years later from complications while in the service, such as insanity, suicide, wounds, dieases, infections, etc. The severe infections that accompanied most battle wounds were due to poor sanitation, lack of medical knowledge and antibiotics. Typhoid was known as "the killer" because treatments were scarce. Also, many soldiers were not brought home for burial. Some were layed to rest in cemeteries of the town they died in, or in National Cemeteries. After doing an internet search of where some of these men could be buried, I found their names and burial places in various National Cemeteries. I only did a few, just to give the reader of this extraction a general idea in where to look for burial records. You will find my notes in brackets ( ). You can also do a "search" at the website of the National Cemetery Administration at: http://www.cem.va.gov/ (Copy & paste the above link into your browser) If information was left blank, it indicates that this info was not given by H. Z. Williams. The book sometimes gives other information about some of these men, such as age at time of enlistment, if they were volunteers, reenlistments, or drafted, and other duties. My intent for extracting these names is to give the reader some general information about these men, and what townships they were living in at the time of their service. Included at the bottom of the ADDNEDA is the list of databases included in my research, followed by a LINK to the website. If the cause of death is unknown, you might want to look at other men in their regiment/company and compare dates and places. It could provide a clue into how one might of died, either on the battlefield or by other causes. If you find someone, email me, and I will be glad to send you the rest(if any)information about their military history. - Debbie Noland Nitsche Diamonddeb@comcast.net REMEMBER TO SCROLL THE ENTIRE PAGE "ACROSS" FOR MORE INFO ABOUT SOME OF THE SOLDIERS. Co., Ohio 1788-1881 by H. Z. Williams, I noticed that there was a lot of information about the deaths of these men that was not in the book. This is what led me to do an ADDENDA, by doing a little research about each fallen soldier from Washington Co. Ohio This ADDENDA includes information of ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS that the book, History of Washington Co., Ohio 1788-1881, by H. Z. Williams did not give information on or was stated the incorrectly. It also gives internet resources of where I got the additional information. Some contain my research notes. Is ADDENDA is NOT intended to be taken as a true record of a soldier's death, but a start to assist family historian in a beginning on where to find the fallen soldier. ALWAYS REFER TO THE "ORGINAL" MILTARY AND DEATH RECORDS FOR ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU FIND HERE. Please keep in mind, that this information that I extracted about these soldiers pertain ONLY to their DEATH's. William's History, and the online databases that I used to do my reasearch sometimes gives much more detailed information about these men, such as the date they enlisted, age at time of enlistment, etc.. The list of databases included in my research are listed below, followed by a LINK to the website. Some information was submitted by various people who do research on some of the soldiers listed in the database above. Their names are at the end of their info. He is buried at City Cemetery in Tusa. A photo of his headstone is available on line. Have never figured out why he is listed as having died during the War. There was no other William Cutshaw in his unit or in the Newport area???? Just one of those mysteries for which we will never have an answer! MURDOUGH, Charles J. (Palmer Twp.) Died in Windsor, Ohio. MURPHY, William (Fairfield Twp.) This name was very hard to do research on in trying to determine WHERE he died. According to Williams' History of Wash. Co., Ohio, he enlisted in 1861 as a Private, and was with the 6th Kentucky Calvary, died 1863, shot through the head. According to the information provided by the National Park Service, Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System, there were 2 William Murphy's that was in 2 different 6th Kentucky Calvaries. One was Union, the other Confederate. When doing a search on him in the American Civil War Database, the only William Murphy that inlisted in 1861, and killed in 1863 gives this info: William Murphy: Enlistment Date July 27, 1861; Side Served: Union; Service Record: Promoted to Full Corporal (Acting Color Corporal). He is also listed on the scioto.org website in Co. E 77th OVI (contributed by Carl Eash), gives this info: Scott Howard, Private enlisted at 18 yrs. on Feb. 16, 1864 for 3 years. He was transferred from Company G. Jan. 17, 1865; absent, prisoner of war, died Sept. 1, 1864 in Rebel Prison at Tyler, TX. NOTE.....IF ANYONE CAN FIGURE OUT HOW HE GOT TRANSFERED "AFTER" HE DIED, please let me know. I wonder if anyone that transcribed this information from the 'orginial' copy that is included in the 4 databases above ever caught this error?? The only possible answer to this is a possiblilty that the War Dept. didn't get word on his death until after the transfer. I question this because of the time span from Sept. 1, '64 to Jan. 17, '65. (Almost 4 1/2 mos.) They must of known he was a POW...Why would they do a transfer? SELKEN, Henry (Liberty Twp.) Was a Private. Died in Nashville, TN. SHEETS, Harrison (Wesley Twp.) Accidentally killed on May 23, 1864 in Marietta, Ohio, which was the day that the regiment left Marietta for the field by way of train, when an accident occurred to the train resulting in the death of 3 and serious injury of 3 others. I am assuming that Jeremiah Stuckey was one of the 3 that was killed. STUMP, John (Independence Twp.) The only ifo that Williams' History of Washinton Co., Ohio gives is that he was with the 7th Virginia, Co. B., died. I did not find a John STUMP in either the American Civil War or the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors databases that was with the 7th Virginia. He received a disability discharge on Dec. 30, 1862 in Camp Vinton, VA. TRUMAN, Haze (Hays Truman) - Belpre Twp. His name should be HAYES TRUMAN. He is often mistakenly listed as Truman Haze because of an error by C. E. Dickinson in his "History of Belpre, Ohio," 1920. He transposed the first and last names and changed the spelling. Hayes Truman was the first husband of my great grandmother's sister, Catherine Sanders "Kit" Clark Truman of Belpre Township. Hayes contracted tuberculosis during the war and died in 1864 in Washington D. C. and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Trumans' three-year-old son, Frank, also died in 1864 of scarlet fever, and another son, William Austin Truman, died at the age of 24 in 1884. Aunt Kit remarried, moved to Illinois and had a second family. Jacob Clark of Belpre Township, killed at Cross Keys, Virginia, was Kit's brother. A lot of tragedy for one woman to bear. Happily, her two daughters from the second marriage lived to ripe old ages, including one who passed the 100-year mark. -- Submitted by Shelby Ruch ULLOM, Sylvanus (Grandview Twp.)
