WRIGHT OBITUARIES The following obituaries were compiled by: Brandon Wright bpwrightwv@yahoo.com With thanks to Eric Richendollar, Washington Co Public Library Marietta Register, Thurs 1/10/1878 Wright-At Coal Run, January 6th, William Wright, aged about 75yrs (submitter's note-William was born in 1811, in 1878 he would be about 67 Beverly Dispatch, 12/14/1917 Benjamin Wright The death of Benjamin Wright, for years a resident of Beverly, and one of our most highly respected citizens, occurred at his home on Fifth street, Sunday morning, December 9, 1917 at near 4:30 o'clock. Death was due to paralysis of the throat, with which he had been affected for neary two years. For the past two months he has been confined to his him, and , while his death was not unexpected, it came as a shock to all who knew him. He was the son of William and Susan Wright, and was born in Monroe County Ohio January 31, 1835, and at the time of his death was nearly 83 years of age In early life he moved to this county, living at Lowell and vicinity until 1871, since which time he has lived here. On June 19,1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Cemantha Wigner, of Lowell. To this union were born two daughters, Miss Minnie, teacher in the Beverly schools, and Miss Bessie, of the home, who with the widow survive. The deceased was the oldest in their family, and is survived by four brothers: Joseph W., of Eureka, W.VA, Amos, of Marietta, Freeman, of Coal Run and John, of Beverly (submitter's note, Joseph's given name is Josiah) While at Lowell, Mr. Wright united with the Church of Christ, in 1859, and later brought his membership to the Beverly church, remaining a faithful member until his death. He was also a member of Beverly Lodge, No 84, I.O.O.F, having united with the order in 1878. For nearly forty years an Odd Fellow, he was most attentive to the order, making his weekly visits to the lodge room in the faithful performance of his duties. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon December 11, in the I.O.O.F hall, the services being conducted by the Order and assisted by Mr. J.F. Ryan, pastor of the Christian Church, and Rev. H.W Hunter, of the Beverly M.E. Church. Interment was made in Beverly Cemetery. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Sept 18, 1941 Bessie Beulah Wright Beverly village suffered a real bereavement in the passing from earth at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept 12, of one of its most active and interested citizens from babyhood-Bessie Beulah Wright. Although suffering from marked health disturbance for a number of years, she cheerfully and uncomplainingly continued insofar as her health would permit, her normal activities. Bessie Beulah Wright was one of two daughters born to Benjamin F. and Cemantha Wigner Wright. She was born at Lowell on June 23, 1871, her parents coming to Beverly in the year 1873. She received her education in the Beverly school and for two years was a music student at Belpre. She was a private piano instructor and for 20 years was organist in the Beverly Cumberland Presbytery church and for two other decades was organist of the Methodist church which she was a member. She ad been, for a number of years, pianist in the primary department of the church school. She was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and for three years had been president of the former Aid Society of the church and was affiliated with the Mary-Martha class of the Sunday school. She was a member of the Beverly-Waterford Woman's Christian temperance Union and has been connected with the Beverly Welfare Association and Vivic League. Surviving are the sister, Miss Minnie. E. Wright of the hom; an aunt, Mrs. Laura McCormick of Logan; a cousin and close friend Mrs. Eleanor Applegate Cooke of Jacksonville, Florida, and other cousins. The funeral rites were held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the large attendance testifying to the worth of the departed, further accented by the profusion of beautiful floral tributes. The interment was in Beverly cemetery, C.H. Mindling funeral director. Mr O.E. Townsend of Mansfield, and Mr. and Mrs. John McDermott of Columbus, attended the services. ================================================== Beverly Dispatch, Aug 11, 1955 Miss Minnie Wright Miss Minnie May Wright, 89, passed away Thursday, August 4, at 8.a.m. after an illness. Miss Wright was born in Lowell, Sept 25, 1865, the daughter of the late Benjamin Wright and Cemantha Wigner Wright The family moved to Beverly in 1873 where Miss Wright grew to womanhood. She obtained a certificate to teach in the year which would have been her graduation year, had she not been requested to each in the Beverly high school the latter half of the year. She was the oldest living Alumnus of the Beverly high school. She also attended the Beverly Academy and the Marietta Normal schools. She taught in the Coal Run schools two years, Lowell one year, Belpre 7 years and in the Beverly schools for 32 years. She was a member of the Beverly Methodist church, and a teacher in the Sunday Schools since 17 years of age. She was superintendent of the primary department for many years, and was also a member of the Mary Martha class of the Sunday School. One sister, Bessie Beulah Wright, passed away in 1941. Services were held at the McCurdy Funeral Home, Saturday, Aug. 6, 3pm, Rev. Charles Doddell officiating. Song selections by Mr. and Mrs. Coe Allen and Mrs. Jane Curran. Pallbearers: Ruper Ullman, LeRoy Webster, Leland Riecker, Cody Dixon, William Hal, Lyell Roush ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch Dec 23, 1921 Josiah Wright, who arrived at the home of his brother, John Wright, from Eureka, W.Va, on last Tuesday was stricken with an attack of illness that nigh, which proved to be pneumonia. One lung only was affected and he seemed to improve when he was seized with a second attack affecting the same lung. He failed to rally and passed away at 2:30p.m. Monday. His son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Wood Wright, and the daughter with whim he has been making his home, Mrs. Judkins, has been summoned to their father's bedside from Eureka. (submitters' note: his daughter was Mrs. Hudkins) Josiah was a brother of the late Benjamin Wright of this place, of Amos Wright, of Marietta, and of John and Free Wright, and would have been eighty-five years of age on his next birthday anniversary. The body was taken on the noon train Tuesday to Eureka, where funeral services were held and the remains then taken to Willow Island for burial. Two sons and three daughters survive: Wood Wright, of Eureka, West Virginia: Denny Wright, of Texas; Mrs. Judkins, of Eureka; Mrs. Matilda Pickens, of Eureka; Mrs. Sadie Hammett, of Texas. Four sisters preceded him in death ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, 3/1/1934 Mr. Freeman Wright, aged 83 years, brother of John Wright, and uncle of Misses Minnie and Bessie Wright, of Beverly, died at this hom on Franklin street, Marietta, at 2 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, death being due to pneumonia. Mr. Wright, who was born on May 10, 1850, followed the pursuit of agriculture at Coal Run and Lowell during his active years. On March 22, 1874, he was married to Miss Nancy Dobbins, who survives with the following sons and daughters: Harry Wright, of Coal Run; Frank Wright, of Reno; Joseph Wright, of Charleston, W.Va; Sidney and Nathan Wright, of Marietta, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. On Monday noon the body was removed from the home in Marietta to the Christian church in Coal Run, where at 2 o'clock funeral services were held, Rev. C.L. Kendle, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was made in Greenlawn cemetery at Lowell ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, July 4, 1957 Harry A. Wright, 79, passed away Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. at his home in Jackson Township, Noble County. He was born Oct 29, 1877 to the late Freeman and Nancy Dobbins Wight. He lived in Marietta for several years before moving to Kentucky where he was superintendent of the Cumberland Pipe Line Co. for 35 years. Upon his retirement he and his wife moved to Jackson township. A 32 degree Mason in Campton, Ky., Mr. Wright was married on Aug 12, 1907, to the former Sarah L Alexander of Campton Survivors are: his wife; a son Richard of Beverly; two grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph and Sidney of Devola, and Nate of Coal Run; and a sister Mrs Hazel Dixon of Devola. Funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. at the McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly. Burial will be in Beverly Cemetery. Masonic services will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Jan 16, 1964 Joseph Wright January 7, at 8:45 p.m. at the home of his sister, Mrs. Clark Dixon, Garden City Rd., Devola, Marietta. He was born at Lowell August 13, 1881, a son of the late Freeman and Nancy Dobbins Wright. On February 17, 1902, he married Mamie Ferguson who died in 1950. One son, Dudley Wright, and one daughter Virginia, Also preceded him in death. Mrs Frank Horvath of Columbus, is a granddaughter, and there are two great grandchildren. One brother and one sister survive, Nathan Wright of Coal Run, and Mrs. Clark Dixon with whom he made his home. Three brothers Harry Wright, Frank Wright and Sidney Wright, and one sister Mrs. Frank spies, preceded him in death. Mr. Wright was a retired steam fitter. Funeral services were held Friday at Marietta, with Jess Nutter officiating. Burial in Oak Cemetery. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Dec 9, 1965 Mr. Nathan W. Wright, aged 72 years, passed away Sunday December 5, 1965 at 1:30 a.m. in the Marietta Memorial Hospital after an illness. Mr. Wright, son of the late Freeman and Nancy Dobbins Wright, was born January 7, 1893 at Marietta, Ohio, and when quite young moved to Noble County were he grew to manhood. On December 28, 1912, he was united in marriage to Miss Hazel Glines and for the past 53 years they have shared many golden hours together. They lived in Marietta, Ohio before moving to the Coal Run, Ohio community where they have resided for 23 years. Mr. Wright, a steamfitter by trade, was a member of the United Assciated of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 168, and the Modern Woodmen of America. Those left to mourn their loss sustained in his passing are his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Alton Phelps, Marietta, Ohio and Mrs. David Morgan, Route 2, Waterford, Ohio. Also one granddaughter, Miss Beverly Phelps, Parma Heights, Ohio and one sister, Mrs. Clark Dixon, Devola, Ohio. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 8, 1965 at 2 p.m. in the McCurdy Funeral Home with Rev. J. Lee Gorman and Rev. George Koch officiating. Interment in Beverly Cemetery. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, June 11, 1953 Mrs. Bertha Wright Miss Minnie Wright has been informed of the death of a cousin Mrs. Bertha Wright, on April 27 at St. Joseph, Mo. Mrs Wright was the wife of Curt Wright, a son of the late John Wright. Curt spent his youth in Beverly, living with his parents in Dodge addition and in what was then known as the Warren Wilson home on Ferry Hill. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Jan 18, 1924 Amos Wright, brother of John Wright, of Beverly, and of Freeman Wright, of Coal Run, passed away at his home in Marietta, Thursday night, January 10th. The preceeding Sunday he had suffered a stroke after which his condition was critical, this being his third attack of paralysis. He was the son of William and Susan Wright and was born in Monroe county, May 2, 1840, spending his childhood in that vicinity and later going to New Orleans. He was married in 1863 to Miss Augusta Josephine Severance, who preceded him in death in 1893. The following children survive: Charles, of West Marietta; Frank, of Indianapolis; George, of Akron; Phil, of Marietta; Miss Estella Wright, of Marietta, and Mrs. R R Robinson, of Sistersville. One son, Fred, died several years ago. The two brothers mentioned survive and one brother, Benjamin, of this place, preceded him in death. There are also grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Wright served in the Civil War and his record of war service is most interesting. When the war broke out he was in the river business at New Orleans working on several boats whose terminal point was the city mentioned. He saw continuous service from the beginning to the end of the war and most of it was active service. At the time of Gen. Sheridan's ride on October 9, 1865, he commanded the escort which went from cedar Creek to Winchester, Va., a distance of 20 miles. It was on this day the battle of Winchester was fought. From the Shenandoah Valley he traveled to Appomattox Courthouse where he witnessed the surrender of Lee. Tradition has it that he was chosen to carry the news of Lee's surrender from Sheridan to Lincoln. He was discharged from service at Wheeling, W. Va., June 30, 1865. He has been a resident of Marietta where he held the position of street commissioner, custodian and turnkey for many years. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch Jan 19, 1939 Death of John S. Wright, aged 91 years, brother of the late Benjamin Wright and uncle of the Misses Minnie and Bessie Wright, of Beverly, occurred at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, his demise being due to conditions incident to his advanced age. Death occurred at the home of his son Lloyd B Wright, who resides four miles west of Waterford, with whom he had made his home for about two years. Mr. Wright was born in Washington County on February 9, 1847, spending the greater part of his life in the county of which he was a native. Mr. Wright was united in marriage with Sarah Carson, of this locality, and to this union was born one son, Charles Curtis Wright, now located in Missouri. Later Mr. Wright married Lucy Glogston, of Marietta, a daughter born of this union, dying in infancy. A third marriage was contracted after the loss of the second wife, with Eliza Haney, of Marietta, who died in 1931. Lloyd B. Wright, of Waterford, is a son of the third union. There are nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Wright was the last of a family of six brothers and three sisters. Mr. Wright was a member of Beverly Church of Christ for many years. Soon after the 1913 flood he built a residence property in Beverly where he lived until two years ago. The funeral services were held at the Mindling Funeral parlors at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Rev. Frank Donaldson, of the Church of Christ, officiating. Interment was in Beverly cemetery. Those who served as pallbearers were Rodney, Jack and Ted Wright, Elmer Spung, Richard Davis and Richard Rohrer. Relatives from a distance who attended the obsequies were: Mr. and Mrs. Wood Wright and son and Mrs. Ressie Hudkin, of Eureka, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Clark Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spies, Joseph Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Mate Wright and daughter and Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Brown, all of Marietta. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Mar 12, 1931 Mrs. Eliza Wright, whose illness of a month's duration has been heretofore mentioned in these columns, passed away at her home in Dodge addition early Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Wright was a native of Washington County, having been born April 14, 1852. She resided in Marietta a number of years, the family moving to Beverly about 20 years ago. The husband, John Wright, survives with a stepson and son, Curtis Wright, of Nebraska, and Lloyd Wright of Swift. There are 7 grandchildren. Funeral rites were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, Rev. C.L. Kendle, pastor of the Christian Church, and Rev. Firestone, pastor of the M. E. Church, officiating. Interment in charge of Funeral Directors Maxwell and Mindling, was made in Beverly cemetery. A granddaughter, Miss Helen Wright, will remain for the present with the bereaved husband in the home. Out of town relatives attending the obsequies were: Mr. and Mrs. Free Wright, of Coal Run; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wright, Mr. Nate Wright, Miss Stella Wright, Mrs. Clark Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Lauer, Mrs. Adams and daughter and Mrs. Pfaff, all of Marietta. ================================================== The Marietta Times or Beverly Dispatch, Aug 1977 Lloyd B. Wright, 86, of Stockport, died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at MartkRest Center. Mr. Wright was born April 30, 1891at Marietta. He was a former farmer and former employee of Elston Lumber Co. at Waterford. He is survived by his widow, the former Mildred Geddes; six sons, Robert of Temperance, Mich., Rodney of Elyria, Jack of Enon, Orville of Waterford, Charles of Columbus, Ind., and Wilbur of Bucyrus; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Spung of Route 1, Waterford and Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Roberts of Valley Station, Ky. 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at McCurdy Funeral Home. Burial was made in Waterford Cemetery. ================================================== The Beverly Dispatch, Dec 3, 1942 Lloyd Benjamin Wright, Jr. aged 17 years, 7 months, 6 days, son of L.B. and Virgie Mathew Wright, met instant death in an automobile accident early Friday morning Nov 27, and his companion Kenneth Beebe, also of Waterford vicinity, sustained a broken back, when the coup in which they were riding collided violently with a concrete bridge on the highway between Elyria and Medina. Both had been employed in a defense plant at Elyria since last summer. Mrs. Beebe left Friday for Elyria where her son is in a hospital. Lloyd Wright, Jr. was one of a family of nine children and was born on the home farm in Waterford Twp on April 21, 1925. He attended Waterford High School and at the close of his junior year left with other friends for Elyria, where he received training in the welding trade and for several months had worked at his trade in a defense plant in Elyria. Survivors are: the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd B. Wright of Waterford R.D., six brothers and two sisters, Robert C Wright of Erie, Mich., Cpl. Rodney W. Wright in Africa, Staff Sgt. Jack W. Wright of Bakersfiled, Cal., Pvt. Orville T. Wright of the Army Air Corps, Fort Thomas, Ky., Charles William and Wilbur Kenneth Wright of the home, Mrs. Helen Spung of Waterford and Margret Ann Wright of the home; and several uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives. Lloyd Jr. had attended Sunday school at the local Church of Christ and at the Methodist church. The funeral rites were held at 2p.m. on Tuesday at Waterford Methodist church, Rev. Frank Donaldson of Athens and Rev. Don W. Lucas, pastor of the Waterford church, officiating. Hymn vocalists were Mrs. J.O. Keith and Mrs. C.H. Mindling, Mrs. Bonnie Ball, accompanist. Friends of the departed, who performed the office of pallbearer, were: Graydon Brown, Jack Reed, Lous Turner, Warren Riley, Willard Needs, Neil Davis and Theodore Hayes. C. H. Mindling was the funeral director. (Submitter's note, an additional article explains the accident may have been caused when the vehicle struck a horse on the roadway. C Wright Services for Robert C Wright, 81, of Hasen Drive were conducted Saturday in Bedford Funeral Chapel at Temperance, Mich., with the Rev. Daun Nowak officiating. Burial was in Whiteford Township, Mich. Mr. Wright died Wednesday (Jan 8, 1992) in Toledo Hospital. He was a member and past master of Samaria Lodge 438, Free and Accepted Masons; and a member of Zenobia Shrine and Scottish Rite. A self-employed welder for more than 40 years, he retired in 1989. He was born Oct. 2, 1910, at Coal Run to Lloyd and Virgie Wright. Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Alice F. DaGue Wright, whom he married July 11, 1935; one daughter Barbara Fowler; two sisters, Helen Spung of Waterford and Margaret Roberts of Malta; five brothers, Rodney of Elyria, Jack of Enon, Ted of Waterford, William of Cleveland and Wilbur of Zanesville; three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lloyd Wright Jr.
