She was one tuff lady !At only 4 ft. 9" tall, she was still able to work for the Railroad carrying railroad ties.To get work she used to stand outside a shop and watch through the window to see how it was done, then she would go in and apply, when asked if she had experience, she would say yes and then figure out how to do it as she worked. She worked very hard as a single Mother in the early 1930's. She was a very proud and determined lady.
When Grandpa Birks joined the military as a cook,they traveled all over the world. Not like Myrtle hadn't traveled herself. (see-have the urge to travel). They settled in Grants Pass / Eugene Oregon until Rosemarie & Elmer divorced, at which point they sold everything that they had and moved to Santa Cruz to rent a house with Rosemarie and help raise us kids.
She used to teach dance in Hawaii and was even made a Hawaiian princess.
She invented the matchbook cover Patend #
