Ferndale Woman Succumbs Here
Mrs. Martina Gamboni, 71 years of age and a native of Switzerland, died Monday in a Eureka hospital. She had been a resident of Ferndale for the past 41 years. Surviving is a son, Valentino Gamboni of Ferndale; four daughters, Mrs. Josephine Tonini of Ferndale, Marie Keller and Mabel Gamboni, both of San Francisco, and Lillian Senn of Eureka; a brother Sam Berri of Cambria; and seven grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. this evening in the chapel of the Citizens Mortuary in Ferndale. Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in the Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Michael Manogue officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Funeral For Mrs. Gamboni Held Yesterday
Requiem mass was celebrated yesterday morning at 10:00 in the St. Bernard's Church in this city for Mrs. Martina Gamboni, who died after a brief illness on Monday afternoon in the St. Joseph's Hospital in Eureka. Rev. M. Manogue read the mass assisted by Raymond Grinsell as soloist. Interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were Victor Ambrosini, Joseph Capaul, Eugene DeCarli, John Ransetta, Mike Pieni, and Peter Dusina. Rosaries were recited on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in the Citizens Chapel.
Mrs. Gamboni was born in Switzerland on June 20, 1872 and has lived in this community for 41 years. Her husband, the late Joseph Gamboni, died in 1919. He was a dairyman at Waddington and Mrs. Gamboni lived on the ranch until a year and a half ago when she moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Tonini. Her son, Valentino Gamboni, now conducts the home ranc
Mrs. Gamboni is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Josephine Tonini of Ferndale, Mrs. Lillian Senn of Eureka, Mrs. Marie Keller and Miss Mabel Gamboni of San Francisco and a son, Valentino Gamboni of Waddington; a brother, Sam Berri of Cambria and seven grandchildren also survive her, Pvt. Henry Tonini of the US Army, Camp Maxey, Texas, Joan Keller of San Francisco, George Senn of Eureka and Joseph, Raymond, Irene and Caroline Gamboni of Waddington.
If my records are correct, my maternal grandmother's maiden name was also Berri (Gertrude Berri who married Bartolomeo Jacop) All these Gamboni's and Berri's! Tough to keep them straight. My father told me, before he passed away 4 years ago that I would never figure out the Swiss of Ferndale, CA they just kept marrying cousins!
