BURKDOLL
This genealogy traces the family history of the Burkdoll family in America. It begins with Joseph the emmigrant from Germany and then continues with our ancestors who descended from his son Abraham Burkdoll. The actual spelling of the German surname is unknown.

There is some family lore that says when our family came to this country they spelled their name Burkdahl but changed it when they came over here. There was a big estate in Germany but they didn't know the name of the direct ancestors so they couldn't collect it. As all genealogists know family stories may be some distortion of the actual truth. I have found the named spelled various ways in the records in the US. Further research is required to find out more. I doubt that the name was spelled the way the family lore states.

Abraham Burkdoll purchased land in Switzerland County Indiana when the state was formed in 1816. About 1849 Abraham and family migrated to Howard County. Looking at the land sales it appears that Abraham had sold all of his property and retired about 1856. He and his wife returned to Switzerland County to live with son John Harrison Burkdoll.

Sons Stephen Burkdoll and William Burkdoll removed to Missouri but in early 1860 moved on to Osage and Franklin Counties in Kansas where they purchased homesteads. The Civil War began soon after in 1861.

Son George Franklin Burkdoll was a Civil War Veteran who resided in Spencer County after the war. Both John Harrison Burkdoll and George Franklin Burkdoll purchased land there in 1861. Between 1880-1883 they also left for Osage County Kansas. John Harrison Burkdoll later moved about 1.5 miles from Ingalls, Payne County, OK 1890.
