Notes for Noll:
e-mail sent on 11/5/97,by Ken Noll while in Germany
Dear Dave and Paul,
I think Pat has been in contact with you (Dave) about some of the
information I have found about our family here in Germany.I though I
would write to you and Paul directly to give you a summary of what I have
found. Please note that I will only be at this email address until about
Nov. 19.
About a week ago, I was finally able to find Wahlert, the birthplace of our
great-grandfather Carl Noll.Wahlert is very small and is not on any map
of Germany that you are likely to find in the States. It is a small
village on a hill above Romsthal, which a slightly larger village just
north of the small town of Bad Soden which is about 50 kilometers east of
Frankfurt.Wahlert does not have its own church, but a half mile down the
road in Romstahl there is a Catholic church.A few inquireries led me to
the priest's house.Unfortunately, I forgot it was All Souls Day and the
priest was rather busy.He helped me out for a long time, though, and I
got his address and he got mine so perhaps we can continue this process for
a bit by mail.Like the other churches I've visited, this one keeps
birth/baptism and marriage records. The books there only go back to 1831,
but the older ones are in the church in Bad Soden. The church office there
was closed, but I have that address, too.The church bulletin posted
outside the church in Romstahl was full of Nolls as was the local cemetary.
Also a few Ruppels to whom we are related. Here is what the priest and I
were able to find in the short time I was able to be there.
Carl Damasus (no c in the middle) Noll (born Dec. 13, 1860) was a day
worker in Wahlert. He was the fourth child of Michael Noll and Maria Eva
Ruppel (also of Wahlert).Michael was a linen weaver and it appears they
were married on Jan. 30,1859 (although I want to recheck this date).I was
not able to find out about one of Carl's older siblings, but he had a
sister named Magdelene and a brother named Sebastian (both also older than
Carl). If he had younger siblings, we did not come across any record of
it yet.Sebastian was born Jan. 20, 1848 in Wahlert and married on May
10, 1848 to Magdelene Klug, the daughter of Christoph Klug and Elisabeth
Lauth (I need to recheck this spelling). We did not find Sebastian's birth
in the birth records yet, but his marriage was in the marriage record and
it was here that we found this information about him and his wife.
Magdelene (Carl's sister) had two children out of wedlock, Johannes (born
Feb. 25, 1865, died Dec. 13, 1868) and Theresia Anna. She later married in
Frankfurt on Nov. 14, 1909.Carl's grandparents on his father's side were
Philipp Noll from Marborn (another small village nearby) or perhaps Soden
(the old name of present-day Bad Soden).Philipp was married to Magedelene
Eder who was born Sept. 14, 1813 in Soden but lived in Wahlert.Maria Noll
(nee Ruppel) was the daughter of Johann Georg Ruppel and Margretha Seipel
(need to check this spelling) who was born Dec. 27, 1816.Both Johann and
Margretha were from Wahlert.I have xerox copies of Carl's birth record
and Michael and Maria's marriage record.I don't have some of the dates
for some births and deaths, but I may be able to eventually get these from
the priests' offices in Romsthal and Bad Soden. They have some women who
come in weekly to help out in the office and he said they might be able to
track down some of this information when they have time.I am not sure if
I will be able to get back there since I am only here for two more weeks
and I'm pretty busy in that time.
On one trip with my family this Summer, we stopped in the village of
Bimbach which is just outside the city of Fulda in the state of Hesse. The
village lies on the Luder River and is among rolling hills and farmland.
It has two sections, Oberbimbach (Upper Bimbach) and Unterbimbach (Lower
Bimbach). My father remembered the word "Oberbimbach" on a trunk in the
attic of a relative (perhaps his grandmother).Oberbimbach has the
Catholic church and town hall while Unterbimbach is closer to the river.
Bimbach was founded in the seventh century and split into two villages in
the tenth century. It took a while to settle on names for both places, but
in 1968 they decided to use Bimbach officially for both. The priest at the
village Catholic church was very helpful and we were able to find some
information about the Odenwalds (wife of Carl Noll).Katharina Joshepha
Odenwald was born to Johann Blasius Odenwald (2/2/21-9/6/04) and Elisabeth
Moeller (8/22/25-7/14/96) (both from Unterbimbach) on May 25, 1860.She
was born and baptized early that morning. Her parents had been married on
Aug. 26,1851.She had four brothers and sisters.Cornelius
(8/19/52-4/18/37), Augustin (10/20/54-12/12/17), Maria Agnes
(7/13/58-2/10/59), and Sabina (3/2/63-?).Katharina was the only one in
the family to come to America.Johann, her father, was a shepherd and
Cornelius, her oldest brother, was a bricklayer or builder. In a book
about the town of Bimbach, I found a Konrad Odenwaldt on a list of what may
be donations or tithes to the church in about 1687.Another list of
possibly taxable properties from 1724 gives a Johannes Odenwald who seems
to have had a quarter share of a farm with 2 oxen, a cow and sheep.I also
found a Melchior Moeller (perhaps our great-great-grandmother's family) on
a list from about 1605.There appear to have been a lot of Moellers around
that area throughout the village's history.I also found a Clauss Noll on
that list, but since I found no other Noll's in the book, I assume he was
just passing through.Bimbach is only about 40 kilometers from Wahlert.
There are some gaps and possible inconsistencies in the information I have
so far, but I am confident this is the correct family. You apparently have
information that says Carl's father was named Johannes. From what I could
find, he had a grandfather and a nephew named Johann and Johannes,
respectively. At this point, I can't explain the discrepancy.I will let
you know if I am able to get more information to help clear up some of this.
Take care,
Ken Noll
