Includes NotesNotes for Ole Avenson Veraas (Aas) OAS:
"Ole Avenson Veraas (Aas) OAS born May 13, 1870 Friday at VENESLA, Christiansand, NORWAY. He left NORWAY a few years after his mother died, at age 20-21 yrs. and spent 1 yr. in England and came to Rhinelander, WI and worked as a lumberjack at the logging camp and sawmill called Jocky Lumber Co. for 4 yrs. He went west in the late 1890's and proved up homestead and worked 4 yrs. for a farmer named Martin Soliah of Hatton, ND He left there with a team and wagon going farming between Harvey and Martin. In a letter from Henry Solia in "53 he said he could remember he was a very faithful and hard working man. He proved up a homestead between Harvey and Martin, ND The only reading material he had was his Bible and read it and studied it real well. He got real well educated with the Bible from cover to cover. You could ask him anything about the Bible and he's have an answer. He could recite many, many Bible verses.
He raised mostly wheat, some barley, mostly used for hogs. Ground and soaked and fed some flax and oats, Shorthorn Durham cattle and horses. He had many horses as all farm work was done with horse power till the very last years. Almost always had one or more hired men. Chris (Kristen) A. Weros, a half-brother, Gunnuf Driveness, nephew, Albert OAS, half-brother, Knudt and Augen Weros, half-brothers, came from NORWAY and worked for him at different times. Albert went to school with me one winter. He drove so I got to school that winter and he got English schooling.
The storms would get so bad you could not find your way but the horses could. I remember one time Dad came and got me from school and he asked me which way was home and I pointed where I thought it was and said it was that direction but he said the wind was a different direction so it couldn't be. So he left the horses go and find the way and they did.
One time Dad went to town and a blizzard came up and the horses found the way to our neighbor less than a half mile away. They would have made it home but their eyes froze shut. So he called us and when the horses got their eyes thawed out they came home.
One time mother and I went out on the steps and it was so bad she could not see her hand in front of her. Those blizzards were terrible.. They would pack the snow drifts so hard, one time they chopped steps to get from the house to the barn. As the summer house was on the west side of our house and there'd be big drifts on both sides, between was very little snow. he farmed 48 years, at one time he owned 1010 acres.
1926 Dad went back to NORWAY to visit his Dad and other relatives for one month. His Dad didn't live only a short while afterwards.
They sold their farm in 1946 and they came to live in our lower farm which we purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stamm. Dad lived there for 18 yrs. and mother for 23 yrs. Dad was taken to the Buffalo Memorial Hospital July 30, 1964 with an incurable kidney disease and Aug. 4, 1964 at age 94 yrs. 2 mos., 22 days passed on. Funeral Aug. 7, 1964 at Drammen Lutheran Church at 2 PM, Rev. Fred Masted officiating. A very stormy day. Burial in the church cemetery." Mrs. John L. LARSON
