THE MELVIN NORMENT HOME PAGE
I am writing a history of the Norment-Wilson-Lewis family. I know that White familieswith the surname Norment have resided in Hardeman County since 1830. African American families with thesurname Norment appeared in the Hardeman County Censusafter 1865. the 1860 U. S. Census Enumeration of Slaves list William M. Norment, and J. S. Norment as slave owners with twenty-six, and sixteen slaves respectively. I am tracing William Norment, an African American who was born in 1855, probably on William M. Norment's farm. He married Jane Fisher, and together they produced nine children: Clarence, Jerry Franklin, Thomas William, Fanny Ella, George, Alberta, Lillian, Sally, and Jessie. I am also tracing Albert Wilson and Edward Lewis. Albert Wilson was born on a plantation in South Carolina; he was a blacksmith who bought his freedom, moved to Fayette, Mississippi, married a slave woman, and they produced a son named Nathaniel. Edward Lewis was born in Fayette, Mississippi in 1860; his father was White, and his mother was a mulatto slave woman. He married Julia Wilson, and they produced six children: Arthur, Jewell Anna, Alice, Blanche Hazel, Alma, and Elmer. I would appreciate any information such as wills, diaries, burial records, slave listings, etc. I would love to establish contact with my cousins. | THE MELVIN NORMENT HOME PAGE Updated December 26, 2005 |
