Hi Phyllis
I am trying to find out some information about the sisters, Marguerite and
Francoise Langlois.
I now know thatthey were quite certainly not directly related to Guillaume,
but I do have a big curiosity about them as I descend from Marguerite, (also
Guillaume through Noel).
Marguerite's grandaughter, Marguerite Cloutier (Jean and Marie Martin), was
said to have been a carrier of a very bad dominant gene for a rare (but not
in Quebec) condition called oculo-pharyngeal muscular dystrophy. Marguerite
married into the Caron family and now one of every 1000 French Canadians as
well as some in the USA have inherited this gene. The gene is autosomal
dominant , meaning to have the gene means to get the disease, which strikes
later in life, and affects approx. 50 percent of the afflicted's offspring.
My question. Medical literature states that the gene was brought to New
France in the 1600's by two sisters, no names given. Marguerite and Francoise are the only two I
can find, that seem to fill the correct line of descent.
At that time an afflicted person would probably have died before age 70 or
sooner depending on when it struck, as without modern medical advances, they
could no longer swallow, and would have starved.
Rarely, a female can carry the gene without herself becoming afflicted, but
males always develop the disease at some point in their lives.
I know I did not inherit the gene as my father, his father and grandmother
were not afflicted.
Yet my father knew the disease was in the line as his father had told him
about it...both men were physicians.
Interesting, anyhow...thought you might want to add it somewhere in your
extensive compendium on the Langlois line.
Best Regards
Jacqueline Fortier Doty
