  Notes for MARGUERITE GUYON:
W. O. Raymond page 70, "River St. John": A story of a young English captive, John Gyles, who was carried into slavery by Maliseet Indians in 1689, and later was later sold to Louis d'Amour, the Sieur de Chaffours, living at that time on
his Seigneur at Jemseg on the Saint John River in Acadia (New Brunswick
today). Gyles was one of the first English civilian residents in what is
now the province of New Brunswick. The story also gives insight into this
historical time period when Villebon was governor of Acadia, and resident at
Fort Nashwaak on the Saint John. "

Raymond in his scholarly work, "The River St. John" says of Marguerite
d'Amours:

"Marguerite Guyon d'Amours in her lonely situation and rude surroundings,
face to face with the perils of the wilderness and brought into daily
contact with the Indians, whose frightful raiding activities must have
chilled her soul, although they were perpetrated against the enemies of her
people, is as truly a heroine as the Lady La Tour. Her goodness of heart is
seen in her motherly kindness to Gyles, the young stranger of an alien
race - "the little English," as she calls him. But with all her amiability
and gentleness she possessed other and stronger qualities, and it was her
woman's wit and readiness of resource that saved her husband's fortunes in a
grave emergency."

of his captivity by the Indians and of his being sold to Louis d'Amours - go
