Notes for G
UILLAUME LIZOT:
Guillaume Lizot
In France there is a beetle, a vine parasite, called lizet, lizot or lizotte. Albert Dauzat admits that the last name of Lizot is a surname of obscure meaning.

Guillaume Lizot, son of Robert and of Catherine Joanne, was born about 1644 at Saint Pierre-de-la-Gravelle, today known as Montviette, canton of Saint Pierre-sur-Dives, arrondissement of Lisieux, department of Calvados, in Normandy. The community of Montviette belongs to the diocese of Baveux. During Ancestor Lizot's time, it belonged to the diocese of Lisieux. Guillaume Lizot, obviously educated, wrote his name, "Guillaume Lissot", with flourishes.

BEAUPORT COAST

At the age of 18, Guillaume packed up his things and left his loved ones with the intention of going to Canada. On 10 October 1662, he was at Beauport as a witness to the marriage contract of Louis Cote and Elisabeth Langlois, daughter of Noel and of Francoise Grenier. Paul Vachon initialed the document. Guillaume appeared as a valued servant to the father of the bride.

On 3 June 1664, Guillaume, 21 years old, joined the 68 newly confirmed people gathered at the church of Notre Dame de Quebec before Monseigneur de Laval. Finally, he had obtained his rights as a full resident. On 14 November 1665, Jean Pelletier, from Beauport, ceded 'by way of cens and land rent", to Guillaume Lizot two arpents of frontal land from the edge of the first slope and bordered on one side by Martin Prevost and on the other "side joining the land of the said donor'. Thus, Guillaume became an owner of a small estate west of the Montmorency Falls where he would be expected to build a house and set up a home.

In addition, Jean Pelletier who had lost his father Guillaume in 1657; his mother Michelle Mabille in January 1665; his mother-in-law, Francoise Garnier, accidentally killed during the same year, no longer had a taste for farming the six arpents inherited from his father. Guillaume Lizot and Robert Gallien undertook the farming of the 4 remaining arpents of frontage, which they did until 1668. In 1667, Robert and Guillaume were listed as partners living on the Pelletier homestead.

On 17 June 1675, Pierre LeRoux and Guillaume Lizot made a deal concerning a boat with Mathieu Damours, Sieur des Chaufours. The exact terms of this contract signed in the presence of the notary Rageot are unknown.

ANNE PELLETEER

The grand-daughter of ancestor Guillaume Pelletier dit le Gobloteur, daughter of Jean Pelletier and of Anne Langlois, was born on the first of October 1656, at Beauport. Her baptismal act is recorded in the registries of Notre Dame de Quebec. Godfather: Pierre Soumande; godmother: Marie Olivier, wife of Martin Prevost; officiating priest: the Jesuit Joseph Poncet.

This young, 13-year old girl was courted by Guillaume Lizot. On 12 May 1669, there was a gathering of the whole family at the Pelletier home to sign the marriage contract of Anne and the 25-year old Guillaume. The notary was Paul Vachon. Supporting Lizot were Michel Lecours, merchant-butcher, Martin Prevost and Pierre Vallee, master surgeon. The marriage contract was signed according to the coutume de Paris. The Pelletier parents promised their daughter as an advance of dowry' a cow, two young steers, one hog and a small pig, a dozen napkins, four table clothes, one dozen handkerchiefs and a suit of clothes according to her situation. Guillaume offered a dowry of 300 livres.

The nuptial blessing was delayed until 19 January 1670, the day when Martin Prevost and Pierre Lefebvre served as witnesses. The act recorded at Quebec does not have the signature of the officiating priest. And so began the Pelletier-Lizot love story which still continues through their loyal descendants. The Lizot family lived at Beauport for five or six years more.

SALE TO CHARLES CADEUX

The Lizots, like the Pelletiers, the Lebels, the Mignaults and many others did not make a vow to live in the same place forever. About 1675, a wave of immigration went on between the Coasts of Beaupre and Beauport and the south bank of the Saint Lawrence, especially towards Riviere Ouelle and La Pocatiere.

On 26 March 1676, Guillaume Lizot said he was ready to sell his land and homestead, his cabins and his barn to Charles Cadieux dit Courville. Neighbor Charles offered 500 livres in principal and 10 pins to acquire the Lizot property. At Quebec, notary Rageot recorded this sale in his notes. The next day, Anne Pelletier, Guillaume's wife, ratified this contact in the presence of the seller and the buyer. The Lizots no longer had anything at Beauport, except beautiful memories and good friends. Now, where would their boots take them?

SAINTE-ANNE-DE-LA-POCATIERE

The founding families of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocati6re were Jacques Miville dit Deschenes, Guillaume Lizot, Noel Pelletier, Nicolas Lebel, and Martin Fouquet. We can add Rene Ouellet and Jean Grondin. For all of them, it is difficult to place the precise day of their arrival.

If Guillaume could sell his farm at Beauport in the winter of 1676, it is because he already had a permit to stay in the seigneury of La Pocatiere, at least since the preceding year. The baptismal act of Anne, the third Lizot child, born about 1675, has been lost. If she was born at Beauport, this deficiency in our registries would be much more difficult to explain.

According to the information provided by the church census of the residents of La Pocatiere, it is possible to conclude that Guillaume Lizot owned six arpents of frontal land to the west of the seigneury. His concession and that of Noel Pelletier had been obtained in 1675, according to all probability. period of heroic beginnings.

In order to succeed in supporting their families and surviving, Guillaume Lizot and Noel Pelletier often did business with folks from Quebec. On 2 March 1678, during the winter, the two brothers-in-law had recourse to the services of the notary Filion to sign a joint agreement with Michel Lecours, master butcher. They owed him 339 livres tournois. The creditors would individually pay this amount by the first of November. But "the merchandise which the said Lecourt had, just delivered to the said Lizot would be paid separately by the present buyer.

In the census of 1681, Guillaume owned 4 guns, had 13 head of cattle and 10 arpents of land under cultivation. Evidently, Guillaume, with as many guns, was called upon to do his share of defending the Coast at Riviere Ouelle, in 1690. This was successful, as we know.

From a notarized act signed by Paul Vachon on 29 April 1689,1 learn that Guillaume Lizot. carpenter, had obtained a concession from seigneur Nicolas Juchereau, Sieur de Saint-Denis, owner of the fief and seigneury of Auinaies. At Beauport, Guillaume admitted to a debt of 136 livres 5 sols 'for settlement of account for both the cens and the rent in arrears owed by him lent in his great need and necessity and for merchandise before this day

Lizot immediately paid 18 livres. He mortgaged 12 minots of wheat and one hundred planks to be delivered. "in the boat of the said Sieur de Saint Denis to the said place of Grande Ance"

Along with Guillaume, this debt was signed by Jean Crete, Robert Duprac, and notary Vachon.
Life at Lacombe, la Grande-Anse or Sainte-Anne-de-la Pocatiere had its charms and its difficulties. The Lizots prospered there.

THE LIZOT CHILDREN

Between the years 1671 and 1687, 16 years of fecundity, the Lizot family was enriched by nine members: Francoise, Nicolas-Claude, Anne, Noel, Marie, Marie Francoise, Madeleine, Joseph and Catherine. The destiny of the youngest, Catherine, born on 16 April 1687 at La Pocatiere, baptized at Riviere Ouelle on 3 May 1687, is unknown. The eight other Lizot children reached adulthood, married and gave the third generation 65 new flowers.

1.      The eldest, Francoise Lizot, god-daughter of Michel Lecours and Anne Langlois on the first of May 1672, became the wife of Joseph Ouellet, on 12 February 1691. Alas! On 20 October 1699, she was buried at Riviere Ouelle.

2.      Nicolas Claude Lizot, godson of Nicolas Juchereau on I 1 February 1674 at Beauport, joined his life to Madeleine Mignier dit Lagace, on 18 January 1701. At the age of 34, he also was obliged to leave his loved ones. He was buried at Riviere Ouelle on 28 October 1708.

3.      On 5 March 1696, Anne Lizot married Gregoire Ouellet, at Riviere Ouelle. Mother of 13 children, she died on 8 February 1716 at La Pocatiere.

4.      Her brother Noel, whose godparents were Noel Pelletier and Therese Mignault, wife of Nicolas Lebel, fell in love with Catherine Meneux dit Cheteauneuf, whom he married on 28 February 1702 at Riviere Ouelle. Their family tree sprouted 13 new branches. Noel was buried at La Pocatiere on 12 February 1740.

5.      As for Marie Anne, born at La Pocatiere, fiancee of Joseph Meneux in Janaury 1705, she only had the honor of having three children. She was buried on 15 November 1743 in her native parish.

6.      Gabriel Bouchard, son of Michel and of Marie Trotin, was married on 12 January 1701 to Marie Francoise Lizot, who gave him four children. She was remarried on 25 November 1736, to the Breton, Nicolas Jean Olide Kerverzo, surveyor and notary.

7.      Sbastien Ouellet, son of Rene and of Therese Mignault. led Madeleine Lizot to the altar at Riviere Ouelle on 16 August 1707. The family cradle was lit seven times with the light of life. The faithful wife was buried on 16 March 1765 at La Pocatiere.

8.      Finally, Joseph Lizot, godson of Charles Pelletier on 2 June 1685, was joined in bonds of matrimony to Francoise Dancause, on 25 November 1710. Father of eight children, he was remarried at Saint-Roche-des-Aulnaies to Therese Lebel, on 9 February 1750 and was responsible for six new children, before leaving his native land in April 1768.

According to Jovette Bernier, the generations go away, the leaves of the great family trees fall, but the tree remains, which remakes its foliage.

LA GRANDE-ANSE

Everything was going well for the Lizot family. But one day there was a death. Anne Pelletier was called to leave la Grande-Anse for good. Her burial act has not been located. This unfortunate happening occurred between 1687 and 1696.

On 9 October 1696, Guillaume Lizot and Marguerite Peuvrier agreed together to a marriage contract in the presence of notary Guillaume Roger. The daughter of Nicolas Peuvrier, administrator at the parliament of Paris, and of Marguerite Bourgeois, was the wife of the sureon Jacques Meneux dit Cheteauneuf, and the mother of ten children. It was at Quebec, the following day, that the religious ceremony was celebrated before the pastor Francois Dupre and the witnesses Robert Levesque, Rene Ouellet, Etienne Janneau, and others.

On 12 Janaury 1705, when Marie Anne Lizot was married at Riviere Ouelle, her father was alive. But, on 26 August 1706, in the presence of notary Louis Chambalon, Noel Lizot and Joseph Meneux declared a debt to Francois Madeleine Fortune Ruette, Sieur d'Auteuil, for both arrears of rent for the homestead of the late Guillaume Lizot, their father and father-in-law, respectively, and for the balance of all accounts between the parties. As for Marguerite Peuvrier, she died at the Hotel-Dieu of Quebec on 20 Janaury 1709, at the age of 66.

It is a shame that Guillaume and Anne did not leave us a more precise death record! Just the same, they were the mainstays of their era, the builders of a respectable line of descendants.

FAMILY NAME VARIATIONS

The name Lizot has been variated as follows: Lauzet, Liseau, Lisot, Lisotte and Lizotte. However, Lizotte has devolved into Lizot and Lysart.
