In Sweden, used name of Claes Reinhold Josefsson. Emigrated to the United
States in 1875. Originally settled in Hancock, Minnesota.

Ray Nordstrom was born in Elspersland, Galstad, Sweden, on March 27, 1852. He was from a family of eight children, six boys and two girls, with Ray being the oldest son. He had one sister who was older than he. When they lived in Sweden, they evidently lived on a stream or river because the name Nordstrom means "north stream" in Sweden.

Ray Nordstrom immigrated to the United States in 1875 when he was 23 years old. From around 1875 to 1890, all but the oldest daughter came to America, including the parents. They first settled in the Starbuck-Hancock area, and later relocated in other areas such as South Dakota and Alberta, Canada. Ray Nordstrom's only sister in America also settled in the Dassel area. She (Agnes) was married to Aaron Engberg in 1895.

Ray Nordstrom married Albertina Johnson (daughter of Taylor Johnson) on 5 July 1880, at Cokato, Minnesota. At that time he was still living at Hancock. He moved his wife and two young sons to Dassel in 1884. For a short while he helped operate a saw mill on the John Riordan place, which was located at the west city limits of Dassell, near what is now Highway 12.

They moved to Collinwood Township in 1884 and purchased a farm on the east side of Pidgeon Lake. In addition to his farming, Ray Nordstrom was also engaged in threshing operations for many years, and for a long time was the only owner of a thresing machine in the area.

To this marriage, eight children were born: William 1881, married Ellen Hedlund; they had one son Burton William and one daughter Berniece Albertina. His wife passed away at an early age, and he married second Nellie Freelander. William died in 1928.

John was born in 1883, never married and passed away in 1952.

Esther, born 1885, married Axel Soder. They had three children: Ella, Viola, and Walter. All were born, and lived in California. Esther died in 1964.

Clara, born in 1887, married William Regal. They were the parents of four living sons: Reynold, Robert (who at the present is owner of the original Nordstrom farm), Claire, and Ralph. Clara passed away in 1977. She spent her entire life in Collinwood Township.

The fifth child, Elmer, married Selma Lofgren. No children were born to this marriage. Elmer died at Dassel in 1969.

Harry was the next child of Ray and Albertina. He, like Elmer and Clara, spent his entire life at Dassel. He married Mabel Erickson and they had four children: Earl (at present the only descendant of Ray still living in Dassel with the Nordstrom name), Marlin James, Dean, and Marilyn. Harry died in 1973.

Child number seven was Vernon. He was born in 1898. Rose Severson became his wife, and to this union there were two sons and two daughters: Carol, Rollis, Russell, and Maxine. Vernon died in New London, MN, in 1981.

Albert, the youngest of the eight children, was born in 1900 and married Violet Hedstrom. They had two children: a son Ray and a daughter Joan Virginia. His death date was 1977.

Above submitted by Earl Nordstrom
Albertina passed away, 5 April 1900, leaving Ray with to raise the family with the help of his older children, and relatives. He continued to farm until 5 years prior to his death on 11 March 1923, in Minneapolis.

Notes for A
LFRED JOEL NORDSTROM:
In 1875, he went to Falun, Sweden, and spent 3 years with his uncles
(Claus, Svante, August, and Alfred Englund). He learned the trade of the
carpenter while there. He departed Gothenburg, Sweden on May 29, 1879 for
Hancock, Minnesota. He stayed in Hancock for about a year doing various
kinds of work. In 1880, he went to Fargo, North Dakota. One of the jobs
he worked on was in building the first high school in Fargo. Returned to
Hancock for a short time in 1882. In late 1882, he moved to Starbuck,
Minnesota. Alfred began to do carpentry work and in 1883 started the
first blacksmith and wagon-making shop in Starbuck. Later in 1883, his
brother Gotfred bought out Alfred's partner in the blacksmith shop. This
was the start of the Nordstrom Brothers Blacksmith Shop. Alfred was the
wagon maker. A large percentage of the wagons and other equipment used by
the pioneers in the Starbuck territory were made by hand in their shop.
They stayed in business until they retired in 1929 and rented out the
building. On March 2, 1931, they had an auction sale on the equipment and
sold the building.
