Phyllis,

      Today, I made a significant change in one of the Gravel families in my
database. I suggest you make a similar change in yours and in your web
page. The change involves the parentage of Alexis Gravel who married
Marie-Madeleine Gravel at St. Vincent, Laval on 7 June 1784. Alexis is
currently #77 at your web site.

      I once believed Alexis was the son of Francois Gravel and
Marie-Josephte Barbary (your #49). I now believe Alexis is the son of
Francois Gravel and Marie-Madeleine Charbonneau (your #56).

      The question of Alexis' parents occurs because of a mistake in Alexis Gravel and Madeleine Gravel's marriage record. The record lists Alexis’ father’s name as Francois and does not give a mother’s name - obviously a priest's error of omission. The omission of the mother’s name has caused a split of opinion among the sources regarding the identity of Alexis’ parents. There happens to be two Francois Gravels in St. Vincent parish who could be Alexis' father - one married to Madeleine Charbonneau and one married to Marie-Josephte Barbary. The Loiselle Index, Rivest Index, and parish marriage repertoire all have guessed that Alexis’ parents were Francois and Marie-Josephe Barbary. Drouin, on the other hand, believes Alexis’ parents were Francois and Marie-Madeleine Charbonneau. After looking at the problem closely, I conclude that Drouin was correct and all other reporters are wrong. I conclude that the parents are probably Francois and Madeleine Charbonneau, who had a son named Alexis baptised at St. Vincent of the correct name and age, while I've found no baptism for an Alexis born to Francois and Marie-Josephte Barbary.

      This burst of research came in response to a question I received by
e-mail. I was about to tell the person they were wrong as to Alexis'
parents. All the time I was the one who probably had it wrong.
