RANCOIS 'FRANCIS' GRAVEL:
!BAPTISM/INFORMATION researched by Adrian Gravelle: Francois Gravel (Francois-Amable - Marie-Josephe Taillefer) was born 8 October and baptised 10 October 1802 at St. Eustache Catholic Church, St. Eustache, Deux Montagnes County, Quebec (parish records, volume 7, page 9, baptism #182 in 1802). He married Marie Alarie/Halary (Joseph - Marie-Josephe Larose) at Ste. Anne-des-Plaines Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-des-Plaines, Terrebonne County, Quebec on 1 March 1824 (parish records, volume 6, page 115, marriage record #6 in 1824). I have found the baptismal records of 7 children born to this couple between November 1824 and August 1835. After 1835, the family vanishes and I have no further information. (A Francois Gravel married a Marie Thibault in 1891 at Chambord, Quebec - much too late to be the second marriage of which you refer.) Because a second marriage for Francois is not in Drouin, Loiselle, or Rivest, I suspect it was in the U.S.

!BIRTH researched by Adrian Gravelle: Information from parish records of St. Eustache Catholic Church, St. Eustache, Deux Montagnes County, Quebec; volume 7, page 9, baptism #182 in 1802; available on LDS FHL microfilm #1033320 (gives parents' names; says birth occurred two days before the baptism).

!CHRISTENING researched by Adrian Gravelle: Information from parish records of St. Eustache Catholic Church, St. Eustache, Deux Montagnes County, Quebec; volume 7, page 9, baptism #182 in 1802; available on LDS FHL microfilm #1033320.

!MARRIAGE researched by Adrian Gravelle: (Two Marriages) First Marriage: Information from the parish records of Ste. Anne-des-Plaines Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-des-Plaines, Terrebonne County, Quebec; volume 6, page 115, marriage record #6 in 1824; available on LDS FHL microfilm #1288567 (gives date and place of marriage and parents' names); see also the Loiselle Index of French-Canadian Marriages; available on LDS microfilm #0543764 (gives date and place of marriage and parents' names).
Second Marriage: Information from several sources on the Internet saying Francois produced a number of children in New York state by a second wife named Rose Tebo (probably Thibault); sources are: Robert French (frenchr@slic.com), Robert Robarge (bobpeg@slic.com), Robert 'Bob' Gravel (commish@slic.com).

!From Adrian Gravelle: The surname is indeed "Gravelin" - a census-taker's error. At first glance, the surname looks like "Havelin" - that's why I missed it.)

Here's the data: 1870 U.S. Census of Franklin County, Town of Bellmont,
page 28, dwelling 188, family 200; shows Francis "Gravlin," age 66, a
farmer, born in Canada, cannot read or write, owning $1000 of real
property and $300 of personal property, married to Rose, age 44, born in
Canada, cannot read or write, and 11 children (available at the National
Archives, microfilm series M593, roll 937; also available on LDS FHL
microfilm #0552436).

The eleven children, in the order they are listed in the census are:
Michael, age 25, a farm laborer; Mary, age 18; Fred, age 17; William,
age 15; Caroline, age 12; Moses, age 10; Dewitt, age 8; Joseph, age 6;
Levi, age 2; George, age 4. The census has a couple of errors in
addition to the surname error: it lists Michael as a female, and
"Dewitt" is surely Dwight.

OSE TEBO, THIBAULT:
Gravel Genforum: According to Tammy this family moved to Owl's Head, NY around 1870.

!Tebo is an Americanized spelling of Thibault, which is pronounced Tebo in French.

My name is Robert V. Gravel, Sr., of Malone New York. My father was
Wallace Henry Gravel. His father was Frank Francis Gravel, son of Henry
George Gravel, son of Francois Gravel and Rose Tebo. That makes me a
real Gravel descendant. I not only have paper records and photographs,
I have the personal experience of having discussed my ancestors with
three generations of Gravels.

I have been working on the Gravel genealogy for several years. Although
I don't have the time, expertise and resources that it appears you have,
I have devoted a lot of time to it. I have been emailing Adrian
Gravelle in the past few days, and have sent some of the Franklin County
New York Gravel information to him. I gave a copy of my database to
Robert Robarge and Robert French, and they have been working to enhance
it, just as I have. I notice the fruits of my labor appearing at #115
of your Family Tree Maker Gravel site with credits to Robarge and
French. I know they have been in contact with you, and I am not sure
what information they provided, as it is not clear as recorded.

Both you and Adrian have accomplished a great deal with the Gravel
genealogy. I have to give you a lot of credit.

Robert V. Gravel: Family information says: The 1850 census for the town of Bangor, Franklin Co., NY gives Clarissa's age as 25 years and her place of birth as Canada E., probably refers to Canada East which could be present day Vermont as the exact boundary lines were unclear at the time of Clarissa's birth. The name Clasifsa comes from the 1850 census of Bangor, NY it was difficult to read and therefore open to interpretation. The name Clemence I believe comes from the records of Bob Gravel and also the records of Adrian J. Gravelle.

!Bob,

A lot of good Union soldiers died during McClellan's ill-fated
Penninsular Campaign outside Richmond. Now we know that the honored
dead included one Gravel who "bought the farm" at Gaines Mills.

Actually, Edward's age at death matches with his age in the 1850
census, when he was 12.

      Thanks!
Adrian
Robert H French wrote:

I just recalled a book I read so I looked it up. It is titled "Bull
Run to Chancellorsville" by Newton Martin Curtis, Pub by Putnam &
Sons, 1906. Chapter XXXI, Regimental Roster, Sixteenth New York
Infantry, Company I, page 355, Gravell, Edward, age 24, 5-71/4, killed
June 27, 1862. Appendix A, page 363, "In the Battle of Gaines's Mill,
June 27, 1862", killed Edward Gravell.

This age of 24, puts him two years closer to the age in the census.
It looks as if he may have adjusted his age to gain entry.

Thanks for your information yesterday....Bob French
