!This document from a history book dating back 1930 copied by Maurice & Madeleine (Ethier) Gravelle: Alfred Gravelle maintains a residence in Spokane, Washington though his post office address is Reardan, Washington. He was born 4 July 1854, in Montreal, Canada of French extraction, and is now living in Big Hole, Montana. The subjects mother is Sophia (Dow) Gravelle, and is still living at the age of seventy-six with her husband at the age of seventy-eight, Big Hole, Montana. She is of Scotch descent and was born and reared in Canada.

!Birth & Christening: Information from Adrian Gravelle says information from parish records of Ste. Therese de Blainville, Blainville, Terrebonne Co., Quebec; Volume 5, page 19, baptismal record #143 in 1822; available on LDS FLH microfilm #1033316 (gives parents' names; says birth and baptism were same day).

!MARRIAGE: Parish records of St. Augustin Catholic Church, St. Augustin, Deux Montagnes, Quebec; Volume 1, page 153, marriage record #2 for the year 1845; availabe on LDS FHL microilm #1287110 (record lists parents names).

!DEATH: Information not researched; this person was living in Big Hole, Montana in 1904, according to information contained in a biography of their son, Alfred, found at page 447, History of the Big Bend Country, Published in 1904 (Westrn Publishing Co., Spokane, Washington), photocopy of this page in possession of Adrian J. Gravelle (also in possession of Phyllis Nordstrom), received from Maurice Gravelle, Edmonton, Alberta, by mail 11 August 1998 (says Octave, age 78 years, was then living with his wife, Sophie, at Big Hole, Montana-have assumed that death occurred in Montana).

!Census 1870 Rutland, VT from Adrian January 2001:
Maurice and Phyllis,

When I was at the National Archives in Washington this morning, I
looked for Octave Gravel and Sophie Daoust and their family in the 1870
census of Rutland, Vermont. The good news is I found the family. The
bad news is that there is no Joseph born in 1868 in the family. This is
a not a nice surprise. Any ideas?

When I next visit the National Archives, I'll look further in
Rutland County for other Gravels. The IGI showed Joseph as born in
Pittsfield Twp., so I need to locate a Vermont map with townships shown
on it.

Here is the data: 1870 U.S. Census for the town of Rutland, Rutland
County, Vermont; available on microfilm at the National Archives,
Washington, DC; series M593, roll #1625, family #1355, page 167, lines
16-28 (shows Octave Gravel, age 47 and born in Canada, a laborer;
Sophie, age 45 and born in Canada; Octave, age 23 and born in Canada,
laborer; Delphine, age 21 and born in Canada; Alfred, age 19 and born in
Canada; Joseph, age 17 and born in Canada; Victor [Hector?], age 14 and
born in Canada; Mathilde, age 13 and born in Canada; Zilda, age 13 and
born in Canada [a marginal notation says Mathilda and Zilda were twins];
Alphonse, age 9 and born in Canada; Sophie, age 7 and born in Canada;
Adolphe, age 1 year and born in Vermont; Lizzie, age 12 and born in
Canada).

Some days you gain ground and some days you lose ground. Today may
be the latter.

Adrian

!1900 census This is definitely Octave and Sophie Daoust and two of their sons. Other
sources say they lived at Big Hole, MT in their old age. Big Hole is presumably
in Beaverhead County. I agree the birth information is screwy, except for
Sophie, which is probably correct. Octave was actually born 13 Nov 1822 at Ste.
Therese-de-Blainville, according to his baptismal record. Son Alphonse was
actually born 30 Sept 1860 at Ste. Therese according to his baptismal record.
And, son Adolphe was actually born 7 March 1869 in Rutland Twp., Rutland County,
Vermont according to the IGI and 1870 U.S. Census.

Madeleine was gone to a live play last night and I reviewed all the
information I had received and this is the question that I would like
answered. Joseph got married at 20 years of age or the other Joseph
would have married at the age of 39.

This is taken from a book published in 1988 by Roland Berube a catholic
priest in Lamoureux Alberta Canada. Lamoureux is no longer shown on any
map, therefore if you find Fort Saskatchewan, Lamoureux is one mile
north across the North Saskatchewan River as the crow flies. Mr Rocque
was an interesting figure of the early Lamoureux History.
Page 37 II“Rosalie Rocque (my grandmother) was born on December 16 1870 at
St-Pie, Montreal; daughter of Alfred Rocque and Euphemie Tarte. Coming
west with her parents to Medical Lake WA. She met and married Joseph
Gravelle on July 27 1892; whose parents Octave Gravelle and Sophia
D’Aoust lived in Missoula, Montana. Joseph died July 23 1894 of
pneumonia at Medical Lake WA. Rosalie with her two children Edna and
Joseph Arthur , accompanied her parents to Edmonton and Lamoureux in
1895.”

Edna was born May 1 1893 in St John WA Died in Lamoureux April 26
1934, she has lost a lung at the age of 12. Joseph Arthur (My Father)
was born January 3 1895 in Medical WA, died in Edmonton May 5 1993.

I have another birth location for Rosalie which states she was born on
December 16 1870 Roxton, Falls Quebec. Marriage Certificate that I have
Rose Rocque married Joseph Gravelle July 17 1892 County of Spokane WA.

Adrian sent me the family of Octave and Sophia Gravel.
The 6th child was named Joseph born February 5th 1853 (vol 8, page253)
The 15th child was also named Joseph born about 1872 this could be my
grandfather.

Rosalie born 1870 married 1892 at 22 years old.
Joseph born 1872 married 1892 at 20 years old.
If it is the first Joseph then he would have been 39 years old I don't
think so. If the date July 23 1894 when he died in Medical Lake WA could
be found maybe his date of birth could be found.
I have the Address and Telephone number of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day, they do not have any U S information here other than
Canadian. Good Luck.

!Information from Maurice April 1999: Says I do not have a firm birth date for my father' father. All I have is that he passed away when my father was 6 months old with Pleurisy, (July 1895?).

From:      gravelle@planet.eon.net (Maurice Gravelle)
To:      PhyllisNor@aol.com (Phyllis Nordstrom)

Some of the information on this week's email was found at one of my
sisters who had a note book my mother kept. She had written that my
father's Dad died on July 23 1894 in Davenport, WA was buried in Medical
Lake, WA. no burial date. My father was born January 3 1895 and was told
that my Father Joseph Arthur Gravelle was six months old when his father
died. The date on the Octave & Sophia's Gravel family tree there were
two Joseph one's birth date is shown as the 6th child born February 4
1853. The 15th child Joseph believed to be born in Rutland County,
Vermont July 4 1868. This birth date is not included in their family
three. In an archive in Davenport, WA. we found this in a book Mr.
Gravelle came with his parents from Rutland, Vermont in 1865 and was
employed for a time in the marble quarries near that city. In 1870 he
went to Virgina City, Nevada spending several years in the mines there.
I received a lot of Gravelle ancestor's names but without birth dates it
is difficult to organize a family tree that makes sense. It would be
great if some day we could rightly follow from now to 1500 on our family
tree with that we would require all listed birth dates. Thank you and
Adrian to get me this far in work we started back in 1950. Maurice
