Jesse Norris was possibly born in July or August 1810 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was first married to Charlotte Holman in 1830 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. In 1835, they emigrated with the Norris family to Overton County, Tennessee. Charlotte and Jesse were divorced about 1845 in Overton County, Tennessee. She returned to Wilkes County, North Carolina, with their children to live with her family. Jesse was married second to Delilah Cannon about 1847. Her older sister, Mary Jane, had married Jesse's brother, Jonathan. Jesse died, possibly from consumption (tuberculosis), in 1849 in Overton County, Tennessee, and was buried in an unmarked grave.

Thomas Champlin was born to a prestigous Rhode Island family in 1792. He was born in Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island. He was a farmer and millright. He was married to Mary Wilbur about 1812. They emigrated to Grainger County, Tennessee, about 1817. Thomas operated a mill there. He and Mary moved to Arkansas before 1850. He operated a hotel in Little Rock, Pulaski County. At this time, he and his wife separated. She went to live with their sons in Carroll County, Arkansas. Thomas moved to Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, where he was sheriff in 1861. He died there about 1865.

In the 1860 US Census for Prairie Township, Carroll County, Arkansas, Mary was recorded in the household of her son, Jesse Stoddard Champlin. She was listed as a "Widow." In the same US Census, Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, Thomas Champlin, 67, was living in a hotel in Batesville. His occupation was listed as Justice of the Peace.
