Notes for Selma Anderson: Selma served as a maid in Boras before she emigrated to America Steve's oral tradition - birthplace - "Boros or Ravlanda" "At last I found Selma in Sätila parish, born in 1887 already. Her grandmother was born in Björketorp parish (but actually not living in the town Rävlanda in there). Those two parishes are situated some 20 kilometers west of Borås, where Selma served as a maid before she emigrated to the USA. My conclusion is that this means Rävlanda, which is a small town, situated some 25 kilometers (about 20 miles) west of the bigger town Borås. Rävlanda is not a parish. The parish where it is situated is a bit troublesome. It seems to have belonged to one district of Sweden (Göteborgs och Bohus län) up to the 1950s and after that to another (Älvsborgs län). A sort of border parish." from Kerstin JonMeyren, Swedish Genealogy Company Some Swedish explanation: The names of the places are medieval, at least some 500 years old, mostly older, perhaps 1 000 years old. The names have their origin from a time when this area first became more densely colonized. Most of them are possible to decipher into modern Swedish (or into English) anyway. The Swedish language has changed a lot since those days. The names of the parishes are mostly the oldest ones. Sätila ( the parish ) means the " Boundary-post by the lake " The lake next to this parish is called Lygnern, probably meaning the "Calm lake". Hulta means the "Small wood" Storegård means the "Largest farm". Björketorp ( the parish ) is easier than Sätila for a modern Swede to understand, meaning the "Clearing by the birches" . Sandlid means the " Sandy slope". Röberg means the " Red hill " Baggetomten means the "Ground for the rams" Högsjöhult means the "Small wood by the high up situated lake". That lake is called Högsjön. Rävlanda means the " Ground with the foxes" and Östra Rävlanda means the eastern part of it. All your forefathers there were farmers at somewhat equal farms. Marriage in those days was mostly sort of a business agreement between two families of equal economical and social condition. The parents generally chose their children's spouses. Thus you can be quite sure you have large farmer roots "down into the ground" of the parishes Sätila and Björketorp and their surroundings for centuries and centuries backwards in time. I will also try to give you some explanation to the names of the farms, which may sound a bit strange to you. All names seem to be medieval. Håkanskila Skattegård: Håkan is a man's name. Probably " Håkan's triangular shaped farm". Skattegård means that the farm was owned by its farmer, who paid his taxes directly to the Swedish state (and not to any landlord) Klämmen = the "narrowly situated farm". Smälteryd probably means the "clearing near the melting ice". Perhaps situated near a slope. Ramnhult = the "small woods where there are ravens". Kärrsgärde = The "field near the marsh". Gunlered is a more difficult name to understand. Maybe the "clearing owned by Gunne" ( or Gunle) |
