1900 lamar County Census list N. Z. Akers bd Dec 1869 as son-in-law and Sevin S. Akers bd Aug 1897 as grandson. Also grandaughter Leo Jones born Oct 1892

[The following information was taken from Cecil Robin McDonald, great grandson of Benjamin and Mary Dennis.]

Benjamin Dennis's family came from Ireland and settled in Savannah, Georgia. Benjamin met and married Mary Bonita White in Savannah. They then moved to Fayette, Alabama. While in Fayette, they lived close to some of Benjamin's brothers. The brothers were not getting along, so Benjamin and Mary moved to Berry, Alabama. Berry is approximately fifteen miles NW of Fayette. During their residence in Berry, Benjamin discovered that they were giving away free land in Lamar County, Alabama; so he and Mary again pulled up stakes and headed for Lamar County. They settled on Yellow Creek, which is about six miles south of Beaverton, Alabama.

There is a discrepancy as to where Benjamin and Mary were born. Mrs. Robbie Dennis was married to the son of Robert (Bob) Berry Dennis, son of Benjamin and Mary. According to her, the Dennises came from Ireland and settled in Savannah, Georgia; and that is where Benjamin met and married Mary. According to census records, however, Benjamin and Mary each listed their place of birth as Alabama. Cecil and I are still trying to put this puzzle together.

Benjamin was a farmer by trade. The Dennises were above average, well-to-do people; but a lot of them were plagued by diabetes. Some of them liked to drink alcohol, and the combination of the two apparently resulted in some of them losing their toes and feet, and death at a relatively early age.

Before Benjamin and Mary died, they moved in with their son Bob, mentioned above. Bob had done quite nicely for himself. There were, at one time, about seven businesses in Beaverton, Alabama; and Bob owned most of them. He owned, along with his brother Bennie, a large lumber company in Beaverton. After the death of Robert (Bob) Berry Dennis, in 1969, Cecil and his wife bought his house and resided their for five years.

Benjamin Dennis was deaf. On November 10, 1921, around noon, Benjamin, having lost his wife Mary eleven years earlier, was on his way-by foot-to Beaver Creek down by the old Kirk's Mill, apparently to go fishing. As he approached the railroad crossing he did not hear the train, and was hit and killed on the crossing. (The deafness was probably caused by a wound to the head in the Civil War.

Notes for JOHN ROBERT MCDONALD:
[Source for the following: Cecil Robin McDonald, grandson of John Robert McDonald.]

John Robert McDonald, after the death of his father, was sent by his mother to be raised by an uncle in Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia. He was unhappy there, for some reason, and at about fifteen years of age decided to run away from home. He found work floating logs down the Mississippi River...the way they used to get logs down to the sawmill. He did this until he worked his way to New Orleans, Louisiana. It is uncertain how long the feat took him, or how long he was gone. He then returned to Dalton, Georgia and went to work for the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad. After his father's death on the railroad, there was a settlement made and John Robert and all of his brothers were guaranteed a lifetime position with the railroad. He was working for the railroad when it came through Beaverton, Alabama in 1886. It is uncertain whether he quit his job and then met Sula Jeanette Dennis or whether they met and then he quit his job. They were married May 5, 1892. John Robert and Sula stayed in Beaverton, farmed and raised their children.

John Robert McDonald was a Methodist lay minister. It is believed that he attended church at Mount Hebron Methodist Church, located about three miles NE of Crews, Alabama. It is probable that he also preached there. The church was founded in 1879.

[The following is a letter written by John Robert McDonald to his children a few months before he died.]
August 28, 1925

The history of a life we spent in some respect and in other not so bad. I have lived nearly 66 years and raised nine children and have raise two more to be large enough to support them selves. And another to 6 years old and have always had a hard time. But their is nothing I regret that I have ever done for them.

I regret that I haven't lived a better life before them. But I have done the best I could under the circumstance.

And I hope and pray that none of them will ever suffer what I have suffered. I have always advised them rite on what I thought was rite. And this is the last.

Do not take the name of God in vain.

Use what belongs to you.

Do not touch whiskey in any form.

Do not look on a lude woman for her steps lead down to hell.

Speak the truth at all times as it sink in the nation.

Be kind to each other for love will hide a multitude of sins.

Seak God while he may be found. This is the most important. Millions of people are going to wait to late.

I had a while the mother of the nine children first mentioned that is in heaven to day. And if you ever meet her again you will have to have part in the first resuration.

And their is another that liveth. Be good to her and my baby and it don't make any difference where you go don't forget this.

I can't do any more for them now. I don't know what is in the future but I certainly can't work now.

I am in a worse shape than the most of people think I am. I have done about all the work I will ever do unless I get better.

So be good one and all and my God's blessings rest on you all.
