[kasel.FTW]

Yelles and family lived in hiding most of their lives, moving from town to town, but Yelles' main residence was Kriesham and Worm, Germany, which are about six miles apart. Yelles was a Mennonite Minister, a poet of note, and a farmer.
William Penn, who was later to be known as the founder of Penn's woods, or what is known today as the State of Pennsylvania, came to speak in 1681 at a meeting in the city Kassel at Frankfort, when he was 37 years old. He then went to Kriesham for a meeting. The meeting was held in secret because that type of religious preaching was forbidden by authorities. Yelles and members of his family traveled from Worm, Germany, by wagon to attend the meeting. Mr. Penn spoke of the need for religious freedom. Yelles and other Kassels present, members of the newly emerging Mennonite Church were so impressed with Penn's ideas, that they invited Penn to their their home. Penn told them of the free land that was available in the new world. Two sons of Yelles Kassel, were the first Cassels to come to America under the terms of a promise to William Penn. They were Johannes (John) Cassel, with his wife Mary, and Arnold Cassel. They came on the ship Jefferies and it took seven months to make the journey. Shortly after Johannes arrived in Germantown, he learned that a large legacy was left his family, through the death of a relative, amounting to nearly one million dollars. It was necessary for them to return to Germany to claim the legacy. A church council was called to discuss the matter. it was decided unanimously to not receive the money, as it would make them proud. Johannes signed the original charter of Germantown, Pennsylvania, where he lived the rest of his life.

Will of Martin Elam (Henrico Will Book 1688-1697, p. 606, dated 7 Mar
1691/2) mentions son Martin, son John, daughter Mary, daughter
Frances (who received two silver spoons with "old Robert Elam's mark"),
daughter Martha. Wife to be executrix. Wording of the will indicates
that none of his children were married at the time, and both sons were
under the age of 17. This will was probated 20 Nov 1695.

Frances remarried after Martin's death to Francis Patram, who is
mentioned in the will of Martin Jr. Source: The Elam Family, by Harvey
Elam. Earl H. Elam says that Frances' remarriage to Francis Patram is
documented in the LDS Microfiche Records "Virginia" (May 1988) page
4,517 -- it shows that Frances Perrin Elam married Francis Patram on 29
Dec 1696 in Henrico VA, and therefore Earl believes that her maiden
name was Perrin.

      4738. Robert Elam, died Unknown.

Notes for Robert Elam:
Robert Elam immigrated to VA circa 1638, sponsored by Christopher
Branch.

Robert Elam and Ann Elam are both listed in a land patent granted
to Robert Elam dated 20 Oct 1652 (Virginia land records, book 3, p.
114). Harvey Elam suggested at the Elam National Tercentennial in
1938 that the Robert Elam listed here was probably Robert Elam Jr.,
a son of Robert Elam.

In September 1997 someone told me that a christening record had
been found in the World Family Tree project for Robert Elam, dated
15 Dec 1607 with a birthplace of Broadsworth, Yorkshire, England.
Can anyone confirm this record or provide some information to
support that this is actually the father of Ann Elam?

1Some people say that Robert's wife's name was Ann. Has anyone
seen documentation or reasoning to support this?
