***** NOTTINGHAM - GREER - KILGORE - DECOURSEY *****

This Home Page contains research into my Nottingham family, which settled in Virginia prior to 1780. WIllian and Susanna Nottingham made their home on land that later became part of what is now Pocohantos County, West Verginia. George Nottingham, one of WIlliam's six children, left the family farm in the late 1830's and settled in a small town near St. Mary's, Ohio.

George Washington Nottingham, a grandson of William and Susanna, fought in the Civil War with the Blazer's Scouts. He survived being wounded twice. He lost an older brother at the Battle of Winchester and his cousin from Ohio at the Battle of Vicksburg. Soon after returning home from the War, George Washington Nottingham took his family on an odassey to Ohio, Illinois and Kansas. In the late 1880's he settled on land southwest of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Many decentents of George Washington Nottingham live near Stillwater today.

Hiran Milton Nottingham, one of GWN's sons, lived in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and California before returning to Stillwater, Oklahoma around 1945. He was a farmer, blacksmith and security officer assigned to protect the Naval Base Facilities at Port Hueneme, California during WWII. Hiram's six childern (John, Viola, Clyde, William Duane, Glen and Leon) made their homes in Oklahoma, Colorado and California.

I have also provided work accomplished by my uncle and aunt (Tony and Jan Greer) on my Greer and Kilgore families.
The Greer family was established in Virginia and Maryland in the late 1600's. This family migrated to Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas. In 1859, David Greer brought his family to East Texas. My greatgrandfather, James Albert Greer, left Arkansas in 1870 to join his relatives in East Texas. He settleed on land, known to our present day family, as the Old Greer Place, which is 20 miles outside of Nacogdoches. Over forty decendents of James Albert Greer live in and around Nacodoches today.

My early Kilgore family history remains a mystery. We can only go back to my great grandfather, Harvey Allen "Major John" Kilgore. Family lore has it he was born in Missouri in 1864 and his mother's first name may have been "Sally". It is believed Harvey's mother and father were originally from Ohio. Harvey had two brothers, Robert and Jeff Kilgore. Harvey was married in 1889 in Nevada County, Arkansas to Martha Jane Griffin. Their marriage license was signed "JC Kilgore or SC Kilgore" in places marked "Groom". The family moved to East Texas after 1890. They lived in Cherokee County most of the time they were in Texas.

I have completed a review of my DeCoursey family which was established in St. Clair County, Illinois (1839) by Thomas DeCoursey. About 1880, Robert DeCoursey, grandson of Thomas, moved to Camden County, Missouri.

Any information or questions you may have about my Nottingham, Greer, Kilgore or DeCoursey families would be welcomed and appreciated. My name is Ben Nottingham and my e-mail address is bnottingham@socal.rr.com. Thank you for visiting this site.
