Subject: Ambrose Hickok Descendancy From: "Sara Bodi" Date:Wed, 28 Nov 2001 15:24:28 -0500 To: Hi! I am a descendant of Ambrose Hickok and have completed a compilation of my family line from materials contained in the attic of my family home in Plano, Illinois. The information concerning the Hickok descendancy on the World Family Tree on Ancestry.com seems to exclude any mention of the 2nd (Julia Marie Hickok, b 1821 d 1856) and 4th children (Lucinda L. Hickok b 1830 d 1910) of the Ambrose and Hannah Foote union. Since Ambrose married Hannah Dosher in 1933 after the death of Hannah Foote, resulting in the births of Sarah (1834), John (1836) and James Riley (1839), I have no doubts as to the authenticity of this information, especially since I have many letters, some clippings, and poetry written by Lucinda. I have one poem written by Ambrose's oldest child (Weltha) and another by his son William, the names of whom are duly recorded by the Mormons on their websites. Julia Marie Hickok was my great grandmother. She was born in Jefferson, Schoharie Co., NY in 1821. She must have moved with her father and stepmother (Ambrose and Hannah Dosher Hickok) to Unionville, Astabula Co, OH where she married Gurdon B. Custin. Born to this union were seven children of whom my grandmother, Julia Marie Custin (1854) was the 6th. However, her mother J. Marie Hickok Custin died with the birth of her seventh child Frank in 1856. Weltha Hickok married Daniel Cleveland in 1843, had one son Wilbur who married Edith ? and produced: Cora, Georgia, and Alfie. William served as a Union soldier, was later married, while Lucinda married Dr. Daniel Smith Jenks in 1852, leaving the family residence in Harpersfield, OH and proceeding with him to his home in Roscoe, IL where she left their three or four children, all of whom had died as infants or toddlers, in the Roscoe Cemetery when the couple moved in 1859 to Plano, Kendall Co IL where Daniel set up the practice of general medicine. Through the efforts of Aunt Weltha Cleveland, Aunt Lucinda Jenks, and Aunt Mary Sweet, three of the deceased Julia Marie Hickok Custin's daughters (Emma, Edna, and Julia Custin) were nourished and cherished. In 1865 Lucinda Hickok and Dr. Daniel Jenks brought 11 year old Julia Custin to live with them in their Main Street house in Plano, IL. Julia's brother Erwin appears to have remained in Harpersfield, OH near his father, Gurdon. My grandfather, Dr. Frank H. Lord (b 1852 in So. Glastonbury, Hartford Co Ct) came from Sandwich, IL to work with Dr. Jenks and married Julia Custin in 1879. Julia and Dr. F.H. Lord had three children: Dr. Arthur E. Lord (b 1883), Monsignor Robert H. Lord (1885), and Frances M. Lord Allaben (1889). I am the third of four girls born to Dr. Arthur and his wife Ruth Sears Lord (b 1893). We grew up in a large post-Victorian house built in 1904 by Dr. F.H. and Julia Lord next to where the Jenkses had lived in Plano, IL The full attic of this house was stuffed with antiques and memorabilia from five different families dating back to the 1850's. It was through the perusal of a trunk of letters kept by my grandmother Julia Custin Lord that I began to realize that the lively creative spark characterizing the family interactions may have emanated from the Hickok women. Thanks to the Mormon website I realized that the crossover Hickok relative came from Stratford on Avon in 1635.....interesting isn't it. That's about it for now.........Sara Lord Bodi, Ph.D. 23 Whitney Circle Glen Cove, NY 11542 Tel: 516-676-0384 email: Sarabodi@msn.com Get more from the Web.
