OMASZ NAWROSKI:
Possible spelling as Tomasra Nawrocki

Galicia - 14th century under Polish rule - 1771 Austria annexed all of Galicia except the city of Krakow which was annexed in 1795. Galicia remained part of Austrian empire until after WW1. Krakow was an independent republic for short time early in 19th century (1815) - Krakow became a free city supervised by three partitioning countries - Western section of Poland became grand duchy of Poznan under Prussian control - Galicia was returned to Austria - remainder became a monarchy united with Russia. The entire region achieved local autonomy in 1861. Only in Austrian controlled Galicia did Poles enjoy even limited political freedom. At the end of WW1 - Austrian empire broke up - Galicia was disputed by Pole and Ruthenian Nationalists. Ruthenians allied with Republic of Ukraine; but Poles established control over whole region in the early 1920's.

Notes for K
ATARRYNY MIELNIK:
It was common for the immigration authorities to Canadianize names during the flood of immigrations that were taking place at the time. There are some people in Canada with the original spelling; however, the most likely explanation is that on passport it was hand printed and the line alongside the circle in the letter "a" in Nawroski was probably not very clear. The spellings from the old country - Nawrocki for males - Nawrocka for females; however, the A after the N is very clear. For some reason the C before the K was changed to be a phonetic S before the ki, making it Nawroski which is the spelling some family member use today.
