By Sandra Armbruster

Community Editor

Nineteen-year-old Michael Carter was "doing all he was supposed to do" Sunday after the personal watercraft he was riding with two girls was overturned by a large wave in Lake Huron on Sunday. After righting the three-person craft, the three waited together until 30 minutes before sunset. Then the two girls swam a mile to shore at Port Austin Road. Carter stayed on the machine. "He was an awesome swimmer. He had a life preserver, a flare and a whistle," said his sister, Nicole."It just didn't work out." After the Coast Guard searched all night, a woman found a teenage boy identified as Carter at Slavin's Point, four miles from where the watercraft had left shore in the Caseville area.He was still wearing his life vest. Carter, a 2003 graduate of Avondale High School, was attending Michigan State University. "He excelled at all he did," his sister said. That included having received PADI open water scuba certification during a family vacation to the Bahamas in June.He was a "scholar athlete," Nicole Carter said, having spent four years on the varsity at Avondale in lacrosse and soccer. "He never got in trouble." In both 2001 and 2002, he received an honorable mention in the Troy Eccentric All Area Boys Soccer. At MSU, he was in the honors college where he was studying to become a doctor. In the last semester, he received a 3.9 grade point average. He also had just returned from a trip to Panama doing research through MSU. He was involved in working on computer research, his sister said, and had just celebrated having worked more than one year at the Red Lobster in Rochester Hills. Funeral services for Carter are at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Troy with the Rev. James R. Rafferty officiating. Burial is in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery.
