Harriet was raised in the Afton and Arispe, Iowa area.Her parents owned and operated a general grocery business in Arispe where she attended and graduated the Arispe Public School System, which later reorganized with the Afton system and became the East Union School District.She liked to play tennis and was fortunate to have the only court in town.
Harriet has always been a good homemaker and an excellent cook.She could feed an army from an empty refrigerator.On a Christmas past she was given a Memory Book made up by her descendants, many of which recalled the smells from her kitchen as they were going through their childhood.She successfully raised five children who can all cook and take care of themselves in fine order.
Presently she lives alone in a retirement village for seniors and is persistantly waging an ongoing battle with her health.

Obituary:
Born on June 10, 1919, at Afton, Union County, Iowa to Harry Sanford and Hattie Una (Briggs) Long. She entered
her eternal rest on May 2, 1996 at the age of 76 years, at Creston, Iowa.She was interred at Greenlawn Cemetery at
Afton on May 4th.
Harriet's early years were shared with one brother, Truman Elwyn, and one sister, Wilma May (husband Gayle
McKinnie), on a farm located ½ mile North of Breezy Ridge School, Section 1 of Union Township, Union County.
She attended the Breezy Ridge School until the age of8, when her parents moved to Arispe to operate the General
Store in the Spring of 1927.
She graduated the Arispe High School in 1936 in a class of four.After graduation she attended the Iowa School of
Nursing at Iowa City.Later she worked at the state hospital at Woodward, Iowa.
On June 17, 1941 she wed Mansel Nurnberg at the First Methodist Church, Des Moines, Iowa.They resided in the
Nurnberg family home, the Gale McCall place ½ mile West of Arispe, until their house burned on February 18, 1942
which started as a chimney fire and was fanned by a strong cold Northwest wind.In 1943 they moved to a farm two
miles East of Arispe and carried on the farming operation until 1946 when they moved their operation to the "Speck"
Bennett farm, one mile East of Cromwell.
In 1949 they moved to the Russell Cheers' farm one and a half miles Southwest of Ellston where they would
successfully raise their family of five children.They are Roger C. (wife JoAnn Stringham), Jerry L. (wife Merry
Cheers), Merrill J. (wife Julie Henry), Toia K. (husband Jack Thompson) and Randy D Nurnberg.She made many
lifetime friends while residing in the Ellston community.
Out of necessity their marriage was dissolved March 20, 1974 and she relocated to Mount Ayr, Iowa.She had
always been an excellent cook and a close neighbor, Aden & Valere Stewart, operated a restaurant in Mount Ayr for a
time which became convenient employment.Later she worked in the kitchen at the Ringgold County Hospital while
her childrenfinished school.
In 1976 she moved to Creston and worked at the Green Valley Group Home for Men.On July 28, 1977 she
married Glen Bender at Grant City, Missouri.She and Glen spent their winters in Arizona, Texas and Mexico where
she made a number of lasting friendships.Although this marriage was dissolved February 13, 1981.
In December of 1994 she sold her home and moved into the Regency Park Retirement Village in Creston where she
continued to make new friends but became quite ill.In March of 1995, after an extended battery of tests, she was
diagnosed with Amyloidosis, an incurable disease that destroys the vital organs.Although her doctors did all they
could and she waged a gallant battle, she lost the war early on the morning of May 2nd, 1996 at the Creston Manor
Care Facility.She had been a resident for only 23 days.
Besides her children, daughters and son-in-law, she is survived by her sister Wilma (Mrs. Gayle McKinnie), eleven
grand children and five great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by Mansel (2-13-83), her parents, Harry
(9-10-77), Hattie (4-28-68) and brother Truman (8-26-33).

They first lived a short 1/4 mile distance West of Arispe on the Gale
McCall Place. On a cold morning they were working in the basement and
there was a big chunk of wood that Mansel thought should be burned that
day and later in the morning, along toward noon he discovered the wood
shingles on the roof on fire and despite the efforts of the neighbors to
try and put it out, the house burned down from that chimney fire and
they lost all their wedding gifts. A new house was rebuilt and they
lived in it when their first son was born. Later they moved onto a farm
East of Arispe, the Danforth Place, before moving to the Spec Bennet
farm located 2 1/2 miles West of Hiway 34 at Creston. Spec and Maudy had
just bought the place in 1945 but couldn't occupy it for another year
and invited Mansel and Harriet to live there as they were needing a
place to move to. Jerry was born while they lived here and just a few
weeks after his birth they moved to Ellston, Iowa to raise the rest of
their family of five children. It was a 360 acre farm located one mile
South and a 1/2 mile West of Ellston on a dirt road lined with plumb
thicket. The farm was owned by Russell Cheers and was rented on a share
crop basis.
