| The annual "Descendants of Johann Ludwig Matthaus Nurnberger" (Louis Nurnberg) was held on July 15, 2006 along the shores of Melvern Lake near Melvern, Kansas. There were over fifty family members from Kansas, Iowa, Missouri & Colorado in attendance to the potluck dinner. Food was superb and conversation was better yet. From October 21 to November 1, 2004 we enjoyed a visit of our European cousins from Germany and Spain. During August of 2007 we enjoyed a family reunion in Regina,Saskatchewan, Canada where we were treated as royalty and were able to meet many of the Nurnberg/Schwindt decendants. I and Chris Harms (a son-in-law) were able to visit the original Nurnberger home in Wunsiedel, Germany again during September of the same year. We are trying to validate the origin of our Nurnberger name as told in a family tale, that it was given to those who transported freight goods out of Nurnberg, Germany during the Middle Ages, a time when people were only known by where they come from or what their occupation was, in our case "The Nurnbergers". Our story alludes to a location (point of delivery?) in Chechoslovakia now called Cheb. Since beginning our research in 1978 we have reunited our family of Nurnbergers, Nurnbergs and descendants in Germany, Canada, Spain and the United States through our genealogical work. Our roots are in Bavaria, in and around the city of Wunsiedel, OberFranken, Germany, nestled in the Fichtelgebirge Mountains near Marktredwitz. We would certainly be interested in hearing from anyone who has further information or even a clue to help us reach back into time and grasp the straw of information that we know has to be out there somewhere. We also strive to assist others as we travel along our path. If you have a common surname, feel welcome to ask questions or state your opinion. Genealogy research is more than just learning about your own family, it's a door to the world and we would like to open it a bit farther. Our 2009 USA Nurnberg family reunion will be in Iowa this year. It will be an informal Saturday evening potluck (don't worry about it if you are from out of town) on September 5th at the Breezy Ridge Farm, 1668 Redwood Avenue (2+ miles north of Hwy 34 two miles east of Afton, Iowa. There will be fireworks at dusk and a nice campfire throughout the vening. Rain date is Sunday the 6th. If you are a distant cousin we would like to hear from you and invite you to the occasion. We are currently making plans for 2010 expecting cousins from Germany. Time and places to be announced. Stay in contact for further information. |
