| I am reserching more about my family. The first to come to America from Ireland was Matthew Lyon. He fought with Ethan Allen as one the Green Mountain Boys during the Revolutionary War. He was jailed by John Adams because of the Sedition Acts, later becoming a diplomat. He was Congressman from Vermont, and was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson. During that Presidential Election, Matthew Lyon's vote broke the tie that split Congress in two....he voted in favor of his dear friend, Thomas Jefferson. Later, he moved his family to what is now Eddyville,KY. Matthew was made an Indian Agent by the government, and died at Spadra Bluff(Arkansas). I know that one of his daughters married John Messinger, and they moved to what is now Belleville,Il. John was the town surveyer, postmaster, and a mathemetician. Any other information would be greatly appreciated. I am also researching my husband's family. I know that his great-grandfather was from Poland, he came to the US before WWI,and served in the Army during that time. The familiy's American name is Fencl, but we don't know much else. The rest of my husband's family came from northern Germany sometime before WWI (the Obergs). Again, any information is welcome! |
