Oberlin Family History

Updated January 28, 2012

I have been researching the Oberlin family for 44 years. My emigrant ancestor to America with certainty and source documentation is Johann Adam Oberlin and his first wife, Catarina Agatha Stober. She was born in 1720 at Staffort, Baden, Germany. They married in 1740 after arriving in America, both having made the voyage with their own immediate families.

Johann Adam Oberlin came to America with other family members in the fall of 1738 from Liedolsheim, Baden, Germany. This emigration was recorded in an old German family bible bought in 1736 and belonged to Mattaeus Oberacker and given after his death to his son Johan Michael Oberacker of Liedolsheim. The handwritten note in the bible is as follows (translated from German to English): "On May 16, 1738 the following people left for the New Land (assumed to be America), these people are Martin Oberlin, Christoph Oberlin, Lorenz Meinzer, Michael Schmidt, Fredrich Tropf, Michael Uebel, Hanss Jerg Ochs, Hanss Michael Roth, Michael Geiss, Lorenz Schmidt and Hanss Jerg Uebel. They emigrated together with wifes and children, their number was in the fiftieth". It is strongly believed that the above mentioned Martin Oberlin is my ancestor but positive proof has never been found. In the book "Memorials of the Huguenots in America" by Reverend A. Stapleton written in 1901 says that this is so, but no source is given for this assumption.

I'm currently working on a schedule for a three-four week genealogy/vacation trip to Germany in 2013.

In June 2006, a Liedolsheim resident located the sale of Martin's three properties in Liedolsheim dated 1737. The sale was recorded in an old account book covering the years starting in 1699. In the record it states that he sold his property and was setting out for Pennsylvania. In this record it also states that he had paid for his leaving the country and had the proper permission from the state officals to do so. Another individual is recording the church records for Liedolsheim and is hoping to have it completed sometime in 2012. This should help identify members of the Oberlin family that remained in Germany or left the area at a later date. The Liedolsheim evangelical church records only exist back to 1734 because prior records were destroyed during a local war.

I welcome information from any Oberlin family member and I am willing to share what information I have on your family that I might have in my records. I am especially interested in older photographs of Oberlin's to include in a family history I'm authoring in hopes of completing after my retirement.
