Notes for Austin C. O'Brien, Jr.: Born in St Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton, MA. Raised in Belmont, MA. Attended local public schools and Graduated from Belmont HS 12 June 1946. Entered US Navy 29 June 1946. Released from active duty May 1948 as Aviation Machinist Mate 3c. Remained in USNR. Entered Merrimack College September 1948. In July-August 1951, recalled to active duty for training when Korean War began, and was accepted for Reserve Officers Candidate School, Treasure Island, CA. Returned to complete Senior year at Merimack. May 1952 graduated from Merrimack College, BA, with a major in Philosophy. July 1952 returned to active duty, attended ROCS at Long Beach Naval Station, CA. August 1952 commissioned Ensign USNR. Ordered to Flight Training at Pensacola, FL. 3 March 1954 designated Naval Aviator and assigned to squadron duty at NAS Chincoteague, VA. July 1956 deployed on the USS Randolph CVA-15. Returned to Chincoteague in January 1957 and deployed to the North Atlantic on the USS FD Roosevelt CVA-42. Returned to Chincoteague in March 1957. 16 March 1957 married Ann Izorah (nee Martin) Allard . In June they were transferred to Naval Air Missile Test Center, Oxnard, CA where he was a missle project pilot. After one year in that assignemt he was transferred to the US Naval Postgraduate School in Washington, DC. June 1959 graduated Naval Postgraduate School. Assigned to US Embasy at Tehran Iran as Asst Naval Attache. Returned to USA in Sept 1961 and trained in VA-44 as a Fleet Replacement Pilot in the A-4 aircraft. 1962-1970 served three squadron tours (VA-172, VA-44, VA-12, as CO 1967-68) Homeported at NAS Cecil Field, FL and at sea on several carriers. After the squadron tours he was assigned as Air Officer aboard the USS FDR CVA-42 based at Naval Station Mayport, FL. 1970-1971 attended and graduated from the National War College, Washington, DC. Upon graduation served as exeutive assistant to the Chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Board, The White House. Upon completing that tour he was assigned to Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Twelve and served on 2 differnt carriers at sea as Plans Officer during the period 1972-74. He was then transferred to shore duty in washington, DC area serving in the Pentagon and the Secretary of the Navy Staff. He remained on active duty until retirement 1 April 1981 and moved to 4300 Longbow Dr in Titusville, Fl and in March 2006 moved to 1404 Las Verdes PL in Titusville, FL., where he lived until he died. During his Naval Service he was awarded the WW II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Honor Medal, from the Government of Iran.
