Notes for Austin O'Brien: Ninth child of John J. and Celia Ann (Finn) O'Brien. Born in the family house on Common St. Graduated from Belmont HS about 1919 and went to work as a clerk in a department store. Soon thereafter, he went to work in his brother's Taxi Service until it was sold, when his brother died {1935}. This was at the height of the Depression of 1930-1938. He worked for a while with the WPA building the pond and park which now fronts the new Belmont HS. In November, 1935 he was appointed to the Belmont Police Department. He remained in that position until he was stricken with multiple strokes, the first one on 26 September 1961. He retired with disabilities and never really recovered from the strokes. He married Mary Agnes Thomasina Cullen at St Colomkille's Church in Brighton, MA in August 1927. They had one son; Austin, Jr., born December 11, 1928. In the early 1940's, shortly after WW II began, their marriage began to fall apart. He was drinking heavily and his wife nagged him about this problem. She eventually left him in Sept 1944 and joined the US Army and served for 20 years. This split caused a rift between father and son and was never healed. Divorce came about 1948 and Austin remarried to Bertha Jane Sparks about 1949. They had one son, James Austin, born about 1951. Austin died 21 November 1975. He is buried in Deland Memorial Gardens, Deland, FL. He lived 74 years 7 mos and 7 days.
