Maurice O'Brien (son of John O'Brien and Katherine Haley) was born 1820 in County Cork, Ireland, and died 11 July 1893 in Belmont, MA. He married Johanna on Abt. 1844 in Ireland.
Notes for Maurice O'Brien: There is a Morris O'Brien (age 50) listed in the 1870 Census, with a wife Johanna (age 50). Living in the same house is a John O'Brien (age 25) and a wife, Mary (age 25). It is very probable that this is the correct Morris (Maurice) O'Brien, and that John is his son and Mary, his daughter-in-law. Further, the Naturalization Records of the District Court of Boston, indicate that Maurice's son, John, was naturalized at the same date, 26 October 1883, as my grandfather, John J. O'Brien. The naturalization records indicated that John (son of Maurice) arrived in Boston on 12 July 1864, from County Cork, Ireland. This is the only information I have found that links the O'Brien ancestors to a specific place in Ireland. John O'Brien, son of Maurice/Morris, was the brother of Elizabeth R. (O'Brien) Shean, wife of P.T. Shean. Elizabeth (O'Brien) Shean was a daughter of Maurice/Morris O'Brien {the brother of Timothy J. O'Brien}. She most probably immigrated from Ireland with her father Maurice and mother, Johanna. Census records indicate that it was either 1863 (1910 census), or 1867 (1900 Census). Note that these dates differ from the date her brother, John, gave on his Naturalization Records (1864). I accept the 1864 date as it was so exact and I suspect the dates listed in the Census Records because of their large variance. Also, I have come to the conclusion that Census records are only as exact as the person being asked the questions. And oftentimes this was an illiterate...especially in the mid 1800's. Elizabeth married P.T. Shean in 1871 (1900 and 1910 Census info). It is uncertain when they settled in Belmont. From the census records of Belmont, it seems to have been prior to 1870, as their names are unlisted in 1860, but they are listed in the 1870, et subs, census. I conclude that Maurice/Morris settled in Belmont first, then came his daughter Elizabeth, with her husband, P.T. Shean. Maurice/Morris settled in Belmont before the 1870 census, with his wife (Johanna} and son John, and his wife, Mary. John and Mary are found in the 1880 census living on Waverly Street, near the P.T. Shean family. Maurice/Morris is listed as "father-in-law" living with P.T. Shean's family. Also listed is a Mary B. O'Brien age 18, a cousin in law (neice of Maurice and the daughter of Timothy J. O'Brien). I believe that this should be Mary J. O'Brien who is the twin sister of William E O'Brien. I deduce that Johanna died after the 1870 census but before the 1880 census. Hence, Maurice living with the Sheans and listed as a widower. Patrick T. Shean (also spelled Sheehan in several of the census records) married Elizabeth R. O'Brien in 1871and settled in Belmont. He and Maurice then became the sponsors of Timothy J. and his children when they arrived in 1872. Maurice died in 1893 and is buried in Belmont. He is buried in the Shean family plot and his birth date is listed as 1818, which is inconflict with census records of 1870 and 1880 which indicated 1820. There is no record of him in the 1900 census and information on him was garnered from the Family records of P.T Shean and the census of 1870 and 1880. He lived approximately 73 years, or 75 years depending of the correct birth date. He lived in the USA 29 years.
