Elizabeth R. O'Brien (daughter of Maurice O'Brien and Johanna) was born December 1846 in Ireland, and died 02 April 1916 in Belmont, MA. She married Patrick Shean on 1871 in Massachusetts, USA.
Notes for Elizabeth R. O'Brien: From the census records of 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910: Elizabeth was born in either 1845, 1846, 1847 or 1848 depending on date of census and how question asked. In most census records, age is asked as of last birthday. Censuses were usually conducted from April to July in the year of their record. 1880 census states her age as 35, therefore born in 1844. Or, it could be 1845 if she was 35 in December 1880. 1900 census states birth in December 1846 and states age is 53 yrs. This implies that she will be 54 in December 1900. This would indicated a birth in December 1846. 1910 census states age 62, therefore born 1847. She would be 63 in December 1910 and that would put birth at 1847, The best bet seems to be the December 1846 date. It is also the date engraved on her tombstone. There appears to have been a close friendship between Elizabeth and John J O'Brien, her nephew. She was helpful to him when he first came to Belmont, The fact that their fathers were brothers and he was in attendance at her wake when he took ill (and subsequently died 2 weeks later) tends to support this belief.. According to census information she immigrated to the USA in either 1863 or 1867. Note that her brother, John, on his Naturalization Records stated that the immigration was 12 July 1864. I believe the 12 July 1864 date to be the most reliable and will use it through out this narrative. What is discernable is that she most probably immigated with her parents: Maurice (also spelled Morris) and Johanna O'Brien and brother John. This information was deduced from the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census. She then married PT Shean in 1871 and they settled in Belmont after her parents moved there. Multiple census records indicate marriage 1871. The exact year of a persons birth is difficult to determine for the following reasons: lack of knowledge by the individual themselves lack of details by census taker Immigrants had little or no written records to rely on Immigrants were often illiterate Using December 1946 as birthdate, she lived 69 years, 4 months.
