Notes for ALEXANDRE MOUTON:
At the age of thirteen Alexandre went to New Orleans where he completed his studies in mechanical engineering. In 1876, at time of the Centennial Exposition he was in Philadelphia building locomotives for the Pennsyvania Central Railroad.A few years later he was called to New Orleans to rebuild the United States Mint.In 1882 the Republic of Mexico employed him
to build the Mexican mint in the City of Mexico.During his stay there he occupied a suite in the Royal Palace of Chapultepec while he constructed the mint in a wing of that famous monument. While residing in the palace, he was presented with a number of historical relics which had been stored in the royal palace, among which was the opera hat of Maximillian.Because of his admiration of Maximillian, Mr Mouton placed an extremely high value upon it.
After completing his work at the mint, he served some time as the superintendent of waterworks for the entire Republic of Mexico, and assignment that took him to every city and village in that country.
Upon his return to New Orleans in 1887, Mr. Mouton was engaged as several years as chief engineer in the New Orleans mint where he supervised the coinage. After a few years there he became interested in the modernization of sugar factories which were then being transformed from the open kettle process of evaporation to that of the vacuum pan.In this capacity he supervised the rebuilding of many of the older factories and construction of new ones throughout the sugar bowl of Louisiana. In Lafayette he built his own new process syrup mill, producing a syrup which won first prize and a gold medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. At the age of seventy-three he went to Ecuador under contract to supervise the building of a sugar factory in that contry on the estate of Don Carlos Lynch.
After his return from Ecuador Mr. Mouton used the leisure of his later years in wood carving.
During the last years of his illness President Woodrow Wilson used a carved cane presented to him by Mr. Mouton.
In 1936Dean Tevis, feature write for the Beaumont Enterprise in Beaumont, Texas, interviewed Mr. Mouton and summed up the interview in these words:
"With a starling ability to etch clearly with words, he had drawn me across the years of eight decades----Portfiro Diaz------his grandfather Senator Mouton, Conklin, Blain, Arthur, Hayes, and many another. His life was long pageant of colorful events which had occured from far Ecuador to Washington, D.C."
Alexandre Mouton was married in 1881 to Marie Coppens daughter of General Coppens of Virginia. There were two sons born in Mexico City; Gaston Alexandre and Ralph Canedo, named for General E. Stanislaw Canedo, member of the Mexican Congress and close friend of Mr. Mouton.
His first wife died in Mexico in September, 1884 Alexandre Mouton married in 1888 Helen Baker Baillio, daughter of Gervais Baillio of Rosalie Plantation, Rapides Parish, and Elizabeth Morgan of Louisville, Kentucky; and grandnice of Thomas Overton Moore, Civil War Governor
of Louisiana.By this marriage weretwo daughters:Lucile Meredith Mouton who married
Harry Lewis Griffin, later to become first dean of the College of Liberal Arts of Southwestern
Louisiana Institute, Lafayette Louisiana; and Helen Muriel Mouton who married a captin of the 57th Infantry USA.
To My son Alex
My son, be this thy simple Plan,
Serve God and love thy Brother man:
Forget not in temptation's hour ,
That sin lend sorrow double power:
Count life astage upon thy way
And follow conscience come what may ;
Alike with heavens and earth sincere
with hand and brow, and bosom clear,
Fear God--- and know no other fear.
This verse waswritten in exquisitescript In the French Bible his mother , Heneriette Odeida Mouton presented him upon his leaving home, Beau Sejour on Bayou, Vermillion, to seek his fortune.Alexandre Mouton was born in 1853, author of unpublished memoirs freguently quoted herein, was the eldest grandson and namesake of Governor Alexandre Mouton. His long life was dominated by the spirit of these beautiful lines.
