According to William F. O'Dell's book, Twelve Families -- An Ame rican Experience, " During the later part of the 1600's, Austi n Odell arrived in Rhode Island. Within a few years or so he bo ught 30 acres in Westerly, a tiny settlement some 25 miles wes t of Newport, on the Pawcatuck River (the present Connecticut bo undry). The town had been settled by whites only 30 to 40 year s before Austin Odell's arrival. (note: Westerly "Town Records a nd Land Evidence __ 1661-1707 and 1707-1717," Book one, p 91 an d 101. The English ancestral family of Austin Odell is not know n. The names Austin, Augustine, and Augustus are used interchan gablely and one Augustus Odell was located in the parish of St . Giles, Cripplegate, London, christened on 11 Sept. 1660, son o f Richard and Elizabeth Odell. No Austin, Augustine or Augustu s Odell could be located in the Bedforeshire area of England.)
During the earlier years before Westerly was settled, the entir e colonial area was called Providence Plantations. By 1644 it w as officially designated as the Isle of Rhodes, or Rhode Island . By the end of the century commerical activities had graduall y supplanted agriculture, and Newport became the center of pirac y and smuggling, as well as legitimate commerce.
