The O'Dowd family of Greenwood, Culleens, Kilglass Co. SligoUpdated October 7, 2003
|Descendants of James O'Dowd 1798-1860
I am researching the descendants of James O'Dowd born in 1798 in Roslee, Easky, Co. Sligo, Ireland.
James moved while still a baby with his mother to "Greenwood" Culeens, Kilglass, Co. Sligo following the death of his father. The move was the result of a land exchange deal with the Jones family.
The rising of 1798 and the invasion of the French in August of that year may have brought about this move.
James is buried in the old cemetery in Kilglass.

The grave is marked with a headstone lying flat. It is beside the Hanley graves and behind the grave of Fr. Lavelle about ten meters southeast from the door of the old Abbey. The headstone is engraved with the following inscription in Middle English script: -
O Lord have mercy on the soul of
James O'Dowd who departed
This life on the 12th day of June
1860 aged 62 years
James O'Dowd was married to Nancy Hanley they had two children Bryan and John. I have no further information regarding John.
The children of Bryan and Honoria Conway were: - Patrick, James, Bridget, John, Bernard, Mary, Michael, Anne and Maria all born from 1849 to 1870.
Patrick the eldest immigrated to Cape Town where his younger brother Michael joined him some years later.
Patrick married Eliza Mulqueeney and went on to have seven children. However, two of these Bernard and Conway immigrated from South Africa, the former to Canada and the latter to Australia. Many descendants of Patrick still live in South Africa.
Michael died in Barberton, South Africa in 1889 (age 27). He was unmarried.
Anne married Anthony Devaney in 1875 and had nine children.
Bridget (Belinda) and Mary became nuns.
I have not been able to find any further information regarding Maria.
John O'Dowd married Celia Sweeney in 1908 and they had five children including James, Patrick O'Dowd, my father.
Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
