Notes for S
AMUEL LESSLIE:
In 1838, Samuel Lesslie came with his family from Henderson County, Tennesse to Arkansas, and located at the mouth of Wiley's Cove, where he was engaged in tilling the soil. At the end of this time, he located on his present farm on which a portion of the town of Leslie now stands. When Samuel arrived, Searcy County was part of Marion County, and Clinton was the nearest Post Office, mill, and trading post. The Post Office of Wiley's Cove was afterwards changed to the name of Leslie, in honor of one of the sons(Andrew Jackson Lesslie). Samuel served as its Postmaster until the opening of the Civil War.

At various times, Samuel bore the titles of Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Colonel. He was Colonel of the 45th Regiment, Arkansas Militia in 1861 and became Captain of Company F, of Colonel Matlock's Regiment of Arkansas Infantry. He was a faithful soldier of the Confederate cause for about two years, being stationed at Little Rock until the fall of the city and then at Arkandelphia until he was taken sick and compelled to retire from the service.

He represented Searcy County in the State Legislature more times than any other man, being elected to serve in that body in 1840, 1846, 1850, and 1854.
