1. WILLIAM¹ GRIMSHAW^1,^2,^3,^4,^5,^6,^7,^8,⁹ was born Abt. 1765 in England or Canada, and died Unknown. He married ELIZABETH ZEPHANIAH¹⁰ Unknown. She was born Aft. 1765, and died Unknown.

Notes for WILLIAM GRIMSHAW:
William served as a fifer in Col. Moses Hazen's Reg't of the Continental Army from Jan 1782 to June 1783. Hazen's regiment was recruited primarily from Canadians who supported the Revolution. He probably enlisted around the age of 14 - 16. He is listed as Canadian, but he may have come to Quebec from England with or without his family, and as a young fellow decided to join the American cause in the Revolution. He received a Bounty Land Warrant for land in Ohio from the War Office for his war service in 1790, but he may have sold or traded it. He had already bought 50 acres of land in Lyman, Grafton Co. NH for 20 pounds in 1789, which he sold in 1793 for 50 pounds. In the 1790 census, he lived in Lyman with his wife, son, and daughter. By 1800 in Coventry, NH he had three more sons under 10, one son 10-16 (Zephaniah), and one daughter 10-16 (Betsey). He had moved to Haverhill by 1801, where he is listed on the inventory and tax rolls for 1802 living next to his son-in-law, William Blair. IN 1802, he received a favorable court judgment of $40 from Samuel Chase of Bath for defaulting on a promissory note. He bought property in Haverhill in 1803 which he then sold in 1806. He also received some property in 1802 (TBD). By 1810 in Haverhill, NH, only one son was living at home (age 10 - 16), and he had four more young daughters under 10.

Notes for ELIZABETH ZEPHANIAH:
From Calvin Lamb, email 9/14/2000: "Was at the Quebec Archives "hier" & could find no reference to "Lepninah" or any similar name in "Répertoire Des Noms de Famille Du Quebec," Des Origines La 1825 AUTHOR René Jetté, Micheline Lécuyer." There is considerable discussion among Grimshaw researchers about who Lepninah was or whether that was really her name. As speculated by Barbara Bonner, it's close enough in spelling to even be "Zephaniah", which could then account for the naming of their first child.

Notes for BETSEY GRIMSHAW:
Probably the oldest daughter of William, who was age 17 or younger when she was married, based on the 1800 census for William.

Notes for WILLIAM BLAIR:
Is the Blair name here a coincidence? May not be related to William or Semantha Lucretiea's spouses, who were supposedly born in Ireland, but, then again...? There is no William Blair listed in Grafton Co. in 1800. However, there are two Blairs listed in Grafton Co., and they both lived near Wm. Grimshaw's future homestead in Haverhill! Page 400 lists Elizabeth Blair (no males, one female 10-16, two females 26-45, and one female 45 and over) and Samuel Blair (one male under 10, one male 26-45, and one female 26-45). Although close by, neither of these Blair families seems to contain an eligible bachelor for Betsey Grimshaw. In 1802, William Blair is listed as living next door to William Grimshaw in the 6th District of Haverhill (he is not listed as a property owner in previous years). The only other Blair listed in Haverhill town records is James, who is on the 2nd District 1802 tax rolls. The Grafton Co. deed records show a Wm. Blair as grantee in 1783, and as grantor in 1795 and 1803.

Notes for LEVI GRIMSHAW:
'The History of the County of Huntingdon' by Robert Sellar states that 'south of the village of Chrysostom, on the north side of the English River lived a Levi Grimshaw who came from New England in 1812'
