Lloyd Ohlin Australia:Information about William Ohlin
William Ohlin (b. August 21, 1857, d. January 21, 1948)
Notes for William Ohlin:
William was born at Baltinglass and moved to Howlong when he was a baby. After his father died and his mother Margaret remarried, he would have lived on the Victorian side of the Murray River from Howlong, just down river from the old punt.Old maps show land owned by George Johnston, his stepfather, who was the punt man on the Murray.William never moved far from here as the land he acquired was 8kms down the river where they milked cows, made butter and sold the milk, cream and butter around the Gold Mines.Between the Farm and Rutherglen in the 1880-90s there were deep gold mines in the area with small villages.William was also training horses for the local farmers and breeding his own.The most Famous horse was Fairfield who was never beaten over jumps in Victoria (and also Lady Fairfield).I have tried to find out who he worked for in his youth to learn the art of horse training as it does not seem that his stepfather was into horseswhen his father brought his family from Baltinglass to Howlong. It was at the same time as Wyse acquired Baltinglass Station from Dr Clayton who returned to Sydney and died soon after Clayton had set the station up as a horse and sheep stud and also grew grapes back as far as the early 1850s.It is believed that Wyse moved some of the stock to Howlong to his farm Wyseworth and that the Ohlin family came with him. Also note that William's brother and sister had the same Christian names as Wyse and his wife. Also William could have worked for Wyse and learnt the horse trade from him or he could have worked with his brother-in-law Tom Newbound who married his oldest sister Barbara. Also note that the Newbounds came from around Lake George which was not far from Baltinglass and moved to Wodonga about the same time. Wyse and his brother had a sawmill here and were in the timber supply business.
At the birth of the children at Baltinglass was a Mrs Brennan, there was a family of the same name at Gooramadda.Did they also come from the same area around Gunning ?
William sold his horse interest in 1927 and sold the last of the farm to his son David in 1940 who milked cows and had bees till he sold the farm in 1964.
William and his son John trained horses for Morris wines for over 80 years till John's death in 1958.
