Listed James Olds as his father. A "Herman J. Olds" (age 58) testified to the identity of Tabitha Olds. His relationship is not given. >> >>Any connections? END 12/23/1998 email from Joe Osborn, separate from the above-quoted message - it confirms we have the right Moses, based on war pension application. Excerpt as follows: >>...Now according to Marilyn Bourn, Eli died in Chautauga Co, NY, in about 1853 and he died without heirs, but listed was Moses, Ira, and >>Sarah Olds as brothers and sisters [Elijah Sr had died in Indiana]. >>Laura (Eli's widow) filed for a pension for his service in the War of 1812. [She claimed] he and Moses served in the same company >>under the same command at the same time. Her pension was denied for lack of proof of service. >>Moses' pension was approved, as was his widow's pension. He died in [Lawrence,] Van Buren County, MI, on August 24 1870; he was 79 years 2 months and 18 days old, so that puts his birthdate as about 6 June 1791 [too young to have been on the 1785 NY baptism records, Joe notes]. He was born in NY and lists his father's name as James. END Census records: 1825 NY state census - Moses and Eli both in Chataugua County. Miscellaneous: Moses listed as a member of the Methodist Church in 1830 in French Creek, Chataugua County, NY. |

Notes for ELI OLDS: Information re: Eli's death - date, place, widow - comes from Marilynn Bourn, who corresponded with Joe Osborn. She stated, according to Joe's email of 12/23/1998 11:13:01 -0600, that Eli died in Chautauga Co NY in abt. 1853 and that he died without heirs but listed his siblings as Moses, Ira, and Sarah (by this time, Elijah Sr., the eldest sibling, had died in Indiana). Laura filed for a pension on Eli's service in the War of 1812 (she claimed he served in the same company as Moses did, and listed the same time periods and commanding officer) - however, her application was denied due to "lack of proof of service." Moses's widow's application, however was approved. See NOTES for Moses Olds. Census records: 1825 NY state census - Moses and Eli both in Chataugua County. |
