| Simon O'Leary left Ireland around 1880. He settled in Bangor, Maine, where a kinsman from his home town, Ballygarvan in County Cork, was waiting for him. He worked as a horse trainer on the Beal farm, where his sponsor and future father-in-law, William Toomey, was manager. Simon's father, and apparently his grandfather, also had the name Simon; as did his son, and I, his grandson. The name continues in the family with several in the next two generations bearing it. Researching our roots involves several countries and family names, as can be expected of Americans. The countries include Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, and others. The families include O'Brien, Neville, Escot, Siciliano, Lutz, O'Neill, and many others. We and our relations are Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and Infidels. We never know what we'll find as we roam about opening closets! Soon I'll start posting specific needs for information and listing what I come up with that might be of interest to others. |
