Notes for Jose (Big Joe) Raul Olivarez:
My father is a legend in South Texas. When he smiled, a gold tooth glittered in the Light. His always wore his 3 inch brimmed Stetson at a slight angle. The big burly man made the wooden floors of the taverns creaked as he walked, maintaining the peace. In the 1940's and 50's he was the best known man in the Valley. Many man respected him, some admired him, and those outside the law, feared him.At 275 pounds on a 6-foot 4-inch frame, he was a force to be reckoned with, someone you would want as a friend. He was solid, not bulky fat, He had thick arms with swollen muscles and hands that looked like baseball gloves. He was the law north of the railroad tracks in Weslaco Texas and throughout the Valley in a time of wide-open drinking and much lawlessness.
When the fights got beyond the loud talking and yelling stage at the Cantina, the call went our to get Jose Olivarez, "El Garonon" (the Stud) a nickname given to him by those that admired his bravery.Pretty soon the big man with the thick broad hands walked in to the fray.Without talking or pleading for a stop to the fight, he would take the biggest man by the seat of his pants and neck, and heave him out through the front door onto the dirt street.Usually that stopped the fights. On some occasions, two or more men would be thrown out on the street.Depending on the cantina owner or manager, the fighters were arrested or just faced Olivarez hard stare, tooth shinning, as he pointed an over-sized finger at the troublemakers.
During the early 1950's the "Pachuco" craze came into being in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. They wore longdress coats that went well below the knees, tight pants at the ankles and billowy at the upper leg.Usually a long watch chain was hanging to the knee and they all wore duck tail haircuts, topped with a wide brimmed hat with a bright feather at the hat band. The Pachuco had a distinctive sway, laid-back walk and the Calo dialect.El Garonon would zero in on the Pachuco, stop them to give a warning to the effect that the Pachuco style was a no-no- in Weslaco. If the warned fellow was seen again, dressed the same, he would get his trusty curved knife and on the spot, on the street, he would spit their pants legs up to the calf line.He would then place them in his car, and drive them to the barbershop and have their duck tails off, by giving them a G.I. haircut, almost baldheaded. The message traveled fast throughout the Valley, thereafter, you did not see many Pachucos in Weslaco. He was a man's man, one of a kind, and a legend.Although he died August 15, 1972, some newspapers in the Rio Grande Valley still write about his legend almost every year to this day.
