Notes for Zacarias Olivarez II:
My grandfather was a farmer, Deputy Marshall in Floresville Texas, and during the Depression in the 1920's, was a bootlegger, selling wiskey during the Prohibition times. He and his family had moved to Garciasville Texas, near Rio Grande City Texas at the time.Once, he took my dad, who was about 12 years old at the time, with him to buy the illegal wiskey from Mexico. They packed the botttles in wooden barrels that were suppose to contain cooking Lard. They would fill the first 1/3 of the barrel with Lard, put wooden planks on top of that. Then the next 1/3 they would place numerous wiskey bottles and then place a wooden plank on top of that. Then the would fill up the remaining 1/3 of the barrel with Lard again.
This day, they were bringing the load from Mexico on a wagon drawn by a team of horses. My dad told me that his father asked him to get down off the wagon and walk across the Rio Grande River with a 30-30 rifle. He told him to walk under the cover of the trees and brush as he drove the wagon. He also told him that if any Texas Rangers or Immigration stopped him, and if he saw that they were going to open any of the kegs, that he was to shoot to kill.Shortly after crossing the river, two Rangers (Rinches as they were called in spanish) came on horseback and stopped his father. They asked him what he was transporting. He told them that he was bringing Lard back to sell. They told him that they had been informed that some contraband was to come across today.
My dad said that his father made up a story of having seen several men with loaded wagons heading about 3 miles down river to cross at that point. The Ranchers thanked my grandfather and went on their way towards where my grandfather had told them the other wagons were headed. They then crossed into the United States and met the buyers at Rio Grande City Texas, and sold their cargo.
